2013 Fiat 500 Abarth Air Conditioning Compressor Cycles on and off.

So I finally tired out my A/C the other day and the compressor did not kcik on. I checked the pressure and there was none. I bought a can of R134a and started to recharge it. The compressor immediately turned on and then cycles on and off at idle or when driving. What is the issue? Too much? Not enough? What makes the compressor cycle on and off?

    Thank you

I’d take it to a automotive AC specialized shop. Someone who can actual check the system for leaks. Run a diagnostic test on the system.

Agreed with smark... have it checked out. Modern cars don't usually lose their refrigerant, so they should be able to locate the leak. This video mentions the proper pressure.

As a couple thoughts, which controls do you have, automatic or manual, which size can did you add, does your speedo show the proper outside temperature, did you follow this procedure, and did you check the pressure after adding? If the car thinks ambient or desired inside temp is met, it could be cycling (thus the check on ambient temperature)... and if overfilled it can shut down. (The system holds about 1 1/3 small cans from empty, per the video.)

The other forum banned you huh? I had a shop put a vacuum on it for an hour and it held so they recharged it and it cools my car down perfectly. It does cycle on and off however just like before.

It probably uses what is called a "cycling orifice tube" as a metering device for refrigerant entering the evaporator (cooling coil). It's designed to cycle on and off, it helps in fuel efficiency and prevents the cooling coil from freezing up.

Yes and I don't know why. They said "conspiracy theory". I'm not sure what that means. They don't explain it, and that indicates that it's probably something they made up.

I can't remember what I may have posted. I prefer the truth over rumor and honesty over lies. Plus I believe in the U.S. constitution and the rule of law. When I was a youngster I risked my life over and over in service to my country to protect those values. Perhaps that's what got the moderators panties in a wad. If they had a genuine gripe, shouldn't they have told me about their concerns?

In my experience people usually scream "conspiracy theory" when someone tells the truth but they don't like hearing it.

Anyhow, realize that modern A/C system have sensors to protect them and these sensors monitor system pressure and/or temperature. If a good pro serviced your system properly and it cools well but still cycles on and off when it shouldn't, perhaps one of those sensors is bad and needs to be replaced. It's an easy job and the parts don't cost too much except for the fact that you have to service the system again and that makes it more expensive than you might hope.

Of course, when your car reaches the desired temperature the compressor should shut off for a while. And, many low powered cars turn off the compressor when you use full throttle. The idea is that you need all the power you can get for passing. Perhaps that function is malfunctioning. Good luck.

Like Map mentioned. It’s normal for the AC compressor to cycle on and off. All vehicles perform the same.. The evaporator will freeze over, if the AC compressor continues to run.

I would still take you car, to a AC specialist. Check to see if your system is leaking.

So I took it to Mavis and the mechanics ran a vacuum on it and it held vacuum and then they recharged it a week ago it it is remaining charged. The issue remains that it cycles on and off every 30 seconds like clockwork. It'll cool down my car fine but the cycling on and off makes the air hot and cold at first and then cool and then then COLD!!!! then cool and so on. Very annoying this can't be right.

    Anyone? It's isn't a leak.

Did you ask the AC mechanic, about the recycling? If it’s normal or not?
