The options were to cap off the old system or pay $500+ for a fancy vacuum break plus up to $125 a year for an inspection. The state and utility have no info on what constitutes an underground system... just mandates it be done. The utility sent meter readers around to threaten home owners 3 or 4 years ago... was simply looking for anyone with a sprinkler head in their yard.
We’re adding WIFI to our new sprinkler system.

That would be a big help locally, especially before I retired. You never knew when it was going to rain in the Spring, when sprinklers were set to go on.

These days they are telling us we can't use a pre-programmed sprinkler system without the expense of inspections and the big vacuum break (and we can't install the unit ourselves). My system is connected to a faucet, so already had 3 levels of breaks but that wasn't good enough. Supposedly it's in case water pressure drops to zero, to keep water from running uphill into the house and contaminating water in the pipes... as if a thousand leaks in their water supply lines hadn't already jeopardized water quality. Of course, using hoses is OK; odd logic.
