TIL: Japanese have two types of personal car drivers licenses. One for automatic cars only, and one for manual and auto cars.

Many countries take driver licensing more seriously than us. I wonder what percentage of drivers there can drive a manual compared to ours?

Same as in the UK. Unless it's changed since I left 10 years ago. As mentioned, I think in many countries it's an earned privilege, not just a right.

I'm from England where hot hatches are more common than pubs! Here, where I'm at in NH, not so much....

Some states are taking drivers licenses more serious these days, but nothing like some other countries. In Oregon there is a long list of additional stuff if you are under 18. Showing up in an Abarth can disqualify you since "it makes too much noise".

Years back, there was nothing special about driving a manual transmission. My older brother got hes drivers license, in my Moms old 3 on the tree Chevy Belair wagon.

I got lucky years later. Took my driving test, in Moms 455 cubic inch, Oldsmobile Delta 88. Flunked the first time, could parallel park the big beast.

One of our DMVs had a trick course designed with hazards to fail kids. The street it was on was marked 25, make a right turn and it's an unmarked road... 20 MPH. I was in the VW van doing 21 (showed as 23) and lost points. Then he'd take people up a killer hill with a stop sign at the top. I lucked out on parallel parking; tiny mirrors.

Seems we're always at the mercy of some bureaucrat idiot making arbitrary rules. They must live for that.

I lucked out for my test. My dad was a fulltime musician, and a part time driving instructor. I had my permit for a year and had practiced everything. Whenever the weather was bad, my dad would take me out for a drive, much to my annoyance! I remember many times driving on mountain roads in the fog and rain. I think I could parallel park better then than I can do now. LOL

My motorcycle test was another thing. The first time I took it, I nearly ran the tester over when I made my u-turn. Had to take that one over again.

I taught my self to drive a manual on a road test. When I was young, I wanted to be a car designer, so I would spend the day going to as many dealers as I could and test drive cars. My first manual car i drove was a Dodge Aries. I know the salesman was biting his tongue watching me operate a clutch for the first time. I told him the clutch felt different than what I was used to. He must have thought I drove a farm tractor. The next lesson I gave myself was in a new RX7. That poor car. I think the salesman quit that day.

With the next generation of modern EV vehicles. Like the Hyundai IONIQ 5. You’ll need to go to flight/drivers school to get a license. It’s not you grandfather’s old Buick. On the Honda E. The instructor, will say adjust the outside mirrors. You go, what mirrors?
