I don't know about the OTS, but the OTR ("radiale" heads... hemi) was rear engine with radiator up front per the articles. I've not seen one in person. The blue car below is the OTS.

He did some really nice work in that engine compartment. I'd found a grill from one, I thought, then it turned out to be a bit of a scam. (That's how I first learned of the 1000.) Abarth took that little 850cc and did some serious upgrades, bumping it to 1L. I understand that it was so "hot" that SCCA wouldn't let them run.

The only Fiats that were air cooled were the ulta-economy 500. All the others were water-cooled. The 600 and 850s had a radiator mounted in the rear. The high-performance Abarth 850 based cars moved the radiator up front.

Below is the standard 850 Coupe engine layout. The waterpump and fan are run off to the side and the radiator is in front of the fan. There is an air duct from under the car that helps funnel air to the radiator. An undertray seals off the engine compartment and large grille on the rear hood helps extract hot air. The 850 cars are credited in having the first expansion tank coolant system.

Below is an Abarth based on the Fiat 600 engine compartment . The radiator is also alongside the engine. The 600 series came out in 1955 and was more modern car with many technical advantages compared to the VW Beetle. Features like water cooling and a semi-trailing arm rear suspension to name a few meant the 600 series had great heat and didn't have the treacherous handling swing-axled bugs had. The 850 models are like a larger, updated and modernized version of the 600. Sadly, the 600 and 850 were not as well suited to the US market as the Bug was. Being not as large and having smaller engines that needed high revs to keep up with US traffic put these cars at a disadvantage.

Fiat Abarth OT 2000 is one hot car.

The OT 1000 cars were a perfect example of Abarths that were mass marketed. They had engine, suspension and brake upgrades but weren't over the top like the OT 2000 below:

The 1966 Fiat Abarth OT 2000's 2 liter twin cam engine had a twin plug head and was equipped with twin 45mm DCOE carbs. It was rated at 212 hp at 7600 rpm (185 DIN hp) and weighed in at 1562 lbs. Suspension and brakes were highly modified and up to their task. However, there were maybe at most a handful of these cars made.

Fiat Abarth OT 1000 had a modified and reworked Fiat 850 engine that produced 74 Hp (about 20hp more than the standard 850 engine) and other mild suspension and brake upgrades. The OT 1000 cars were mass produced and were sold throughout Europe and the US.

Now lets look at our car... 73percent increase in torque, 58 percent increase in power. Internal engine mods such as full floating pistons with special rods. External mods with dual intercoolers and a revised cooling system including turbo after-run pump. A heavy duty transmission with equal length, larger diameter driveshafts and larger CV joints, along with cast ductile iron steel control arms and reinforced rear spring perches. Plus, there are the brakes and all the other upgrades too numerous, as they say, to list. If you look at the whole car, the modern 500 Abarth is as complete a package as any street production Abarth from the heydays. For a street car, I think Carlo Abarth would approve.
