We had the auto-stick with the paddle shifter in the Alfa we had. The paddle shift is handy and I'm glad the 500X went to it. My wife has a Grand Cherokee without the paddle shifter and I do miss them. It was easy to just tap the paddle and downshift when going up a hill.

I used the manual shifter in the 500X to keep the trans from annoyingly shifting in certain conditions. Sometimes too many gears can have a downside.

I find it handy in the twisty roads. You can lock it into a gear that will keep the engine in the power band. Use it alot on my way to Limerock along the Housatonic River in CT (route #7).

i would definitely use the autostick alot on the abarth. I have the feeling I'd wear the transmission out doing that.

I also used the autostick on the 500X when I was going for the best gas mileage. The Alfa, too.

The Grand Cherokee my wife has is so different I rarely shift it myself. It shifts a lot on its own trying to keep the 6-cylinder in the zone. I am surprised how lousy the gas mileage is in that vehicle, but i've never really been around SUVs. It feels like a tippy SUV. Not my style. I do challenge myself to get decent gas mileage when I drive it, so I should use the autostick.

I may do that but you only live once. I had the fluid changed at 30k miles. I will continue every 30k. Best I can do.

I had so much fun driving and shifting that car I'd say it's worth it if, God forbid, it happens!

It's a pretty common transmission. I think Minis have used the same one. More than likely if it goes it will just need to be rebuilt with new clutch plates. My guess is that they will be available for quite some time.
