Is that how you keep foreign competition out of the country, or keep insurance companies happy due to less injury? Regardless, when it comes down to having to redesign taillights to comply....sigh.
I was hoping they'd introduce the Abarth version, or show the 3-door option. Neither. Was kinda a lackluster unveil, actually. I don't believe there was a single shot of the interior, or explanation of it's benefits, the recycled materials, etc.
2017 500 Abarth, manual trans, NAV, Beats, Sunroof, 17" wheels, everything. But no mods. None, nada.

There plenty of You Tube videos of the interior
of the new 500e. Lots of review on that vehicle
    too.

There are a zillion rules, regulations, certifications and tests that need to be done. And that's not counting what has to be done with the dealers. I can imagine finances play a big role too. They aren't exactly rolling in dough, plus they said in the intro they aren't going to make any money.

There are a lot of differences between the European 500 and the US one. You can expect to see differences on ours. For example look at your wipers and the Euro versions's. That kink was put in there to satisfy our regulations. That has to be engineered and then go through all sorts of testing and then has to certified meeting the specs. There's an endless list of stuff like this.

Everything about the European 500s are nicer, then the ones offered here. From paddle shifter, Apple car play, Android auto mirror. Larger touch screen, spare tire location. Front and rear facia updates. Numerous exhaust options, wheel selections. Model packages. Twin air engine. The Abarths front seats. Fiat still offers the 500, in Europe too.

They can keep their dualogic transmission!

Actually, the 2012 US edition 500 was greatly improved and enhanced over the same year Euro car in arguably all ways. Most wouldn't want the 2012 Euro car after driving ours, model to model. Even the updated Euro car in 2014 still didn't have all of our enhancements for whatever reason. This is not advertised to keep harmony with the rest of the world.

The newer cars have some nice features and versions we don't get like was mentioned and our cars are old now and lag behind on some updates. But the takeaway is expect the new 2024 500e for the US to have some updates.

Some of the main differences are our market expectations are much higher in regards to refinement (NVH), infotainment and climate control. Our HVAC system is also expected to handle our climate which ranges from desert to arctic conditions. The old Euro car's HVAC system had to be upgraded for North American use. So while there may not be big changes like we got in out 2012 model, don't be surprised if there are some.

Below is one feature I would expect to get changed for the US. It is the lack of carpeting on the rear of the back seatbacks. This was a something the folks at Fiat USA didn't like and was changed on our cars. If it is not changed on the 2024 US 500e, I'd be surprised and chalk it up to saving some pennies. We'll have to see...

Note the nice updated trunk cover / package tray. Looks much stronger than one used on our cars. 96% of the 500e is totally new. That package tray is happily one of the changes.
