Lots of issues at once- can anyone help?

    Hi everyone,

My car (500e) died recently and I spent a long time going through these forums and finding so much valuable information. I was getting error messages and was unable to go into anything but neutral. I'd had the car on the charger when the fuse shorted and thought maybe that was connected- I tried everything in the 'fix dead 500e' thread and hadn't had luck but also felt like it was doing something and maybe would've fixed with some more time or tries.

I was hoping that information would be enough to maybe get some diagnostic help, however in the meantime my well-meaning mil took my car to a mechanic she knew. He was unable to fix it (he diagnosed it as a power inverter issue, replaced that part and still no luck). So I went to check my car's error codes again to see if anyone here might have any insight, only to find once I inserted my key that I now get nothing. The buttons flicker slightly and that's it, and now the key is stuck. I can't turn it on at all.

Does anyone know what the mechanic might have done? Does anyone know how to find a reputable mechanic to diagnose or fix this?

This has been such a hard time and I know this is a lot of vague information but if anyone does have any help or insight it would be so appreciated. Thank you for reading!

Sorry to hear. I'm not a 500e expert, but I moved this post into the 500e forum section. Hopefully someone will pipe in.

I know on the gas 500, if the battery is dead, the key can get locked. Here's a post on Fiat 500 USA: Fiat 500 Stuck Ignition Key Fix

Another post: 2013 Fiat 500e has no power, key stuck in ignition

Try Fiat's own service training manual (click here)

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Correct: Stuck key is a symptom of a dead 12V starter battery, & just like any gas car, that means the car won't function at all. I'm pretty sure there is nothing else that makes the key stick in a 500e, so:

The first thing you need to do is to supply the battery connectors with at least 11.6V, whether that means jumper cables, charging the existing battery, replacing it with a fully charged one, or hooking up a jumpstarter.

The 500e 12V alarm frequently doesn't activate until after the car will no longer function, so it's a very good idea to have a $26 BM2:

Just put "bm2" in the Amazon search field & scroll down until you see it. Also avail at Walmart.com & eBay.

    BM2.jpg

It has an optional daily notification & optional alarm, with which you can use your own judgement based on the following:

My 2013 will only start reliably with 11.6V (20%) or more.

It will start with only 11.3V (10%), but only if I keep the left door shut, because opening it will prematurely activate the power-robbing contactors ("clunk" sound), & sometimes also the power-robbing brake pump ("buzz" sound).

So I would set the alarm for 30%, & then start watching how close it gets to 11.6V after parking unplugged for as long as my usual schedule allows.

Please confirm that the humidity sensor has been left unplugged. Click to enlarge:

If you were going to check for codes that must mean you have OBD. The type with a cord going to their own screen have been reported to cause problems, so please confirm that yours is wireless (bluetooth or wifi) with just dongle similar to this:

The 500e is notorious for fake codes that sometimes prevent the car from working. Some of those appear to be caused by the humidity sensor, & once it is left unplugged & the codes cleared, the car will often work fine. For example, on Sept 13, after replacing a dead 12V battery, someone had BOTH of the codes that Fiat dealers use as so-called "proof" that you need to pay them $6k for a new PIM. After leaving the humidity sensor unplugged, the codes cleared & the car has been fine ever since.

In other words, it's possible that there was no need to replace the PIM. It's also possible that the new PIM won't work because it needs reprogramming. This is from pg 141 (pdf pg 149) of the service technician training manual "Performing a resolver offset angle relearn procedure is necessary when performing a major repair such as replacing the PIM, eMotor, or EVCU. If the PIM is reprogrammed, relearn is not necessary. Refer to service information for the proper procedure.":

Putting the old PIM back in & clearing the codes might even work. No matter what though, once there's at least 11.6V getting to the system, unplug the humidity sensor & try to clear the codes, looking carefully for any on-screen fine-print about special key position such as "stop" "mar" or "avv":
