Lightbulb BAD Headlight Relays on BCM bypass??

    Hey all,

I have a 13 500 Sport. A while back my headlight relays on the BCM began failing and I couldnt turn off my headlights any longer depleting my battery.

Its summer so I can pretty much avoid driving at night and the few occasions Ive had to do so I have been able to tap the BCM once the car is turned off to turn off the headlights. (Gotten pretty good at where to tap!)

With shorter days coming I want to get this fixed so I was considering a small illuminated switch mounted in the panel near the ESC button (lower left kick panel on my car). This switch would be wired in a way that IF my headlight relay sticks on I can break the circuit using the switch.

heres my technical question on the matter.

IF the relay sticks IE: continues to conduct current through it and illuminating headlights, and I put the switch AFTER the relay will my relays just burn up and fail to allow current flow at some point??

I am basically going to put a physical on/off switch between the headlight relays and the headlights so when the relays fail to open as they should I can still turn off my lights.

anyone have opinions as to whether this will work as desired or not and why?? Thanks in advance.

There are other folks that have done the bypass as you've suggested, and I don't recall them saying it made the situation worse. There are also services where you can send off your BCM for repair that you might want to try. Not sure the 2013 BCMs are still available but if they are that's a pretty pricey dealer fix.

Probably the easiest and cheapest way is to install the switch as you are proposing. If I had to do it, it would be wired to interrupt the ground wire to the headlights. You could then keep it in the ON position unless the lights don't turn OFF. Then you flip it to OFF when that happens.
