The electric Fiat 500 is not currently offered in Australia, however it's expected parent company Stellantis will detail its local electric vehicle strategy later this year – suggesting it launch within the next year or two.

Abarth has revealed that its next-generation 500 model will be an all-electric hot hatch. The new model will be based on the Fiat 500 electric city car, and will be the first EV from Fiat's performance sub brand.

The purely petrol-powered Fiat is no more, with all models hybridized or electric from the summer.

Yep, but the hybrid might as well be a petrol-only. The tiny LION battery stores about as much power as the starter battery. At 68 US HP, it needs every ounce of the motor assist.

Of course, it's the 50/60 MPG figure that excites, not its 14 second acceleration to 60 MPH.

A joint venture between Stellantis and Samsung plans to build an electric vehicle battery factory in Indiana that will employ up to 1,400 workers and become the company’s second such factory in North America.

The venture announced Tuesday plans to spend more than $2.5 billion on the plant in Kokomo that will supply electric battery modules for a range of vehicles produced at Stellantis’ North American assembly plants.

The Fiat brand is all but completely dead in the U.S., with only one car, the Fiat 500X compact crossover, making up its entire lineup. But that's all going to change very soon, according to Olivier François, CEO of Fiat, who has promised to turn the fledgling Italian automaker into a global juggernaut again with five all-new global vehicles now in development, which we might be able to eventually expect stateside.

Just last month, Fiat was not a major part of the big product announcement from parent-company Stellantis, dubbed "Dare Forward 2030. " Fiat was reportedly still working out its future lineup at the time, but it seems it has solidified some plans now, based on comments from Fiat CEO Olivier François in an interview with Autocar: "Fiat should be the people's Tesla: electric for all. Clearly, we need the cost of electrification to go down. By 2027, we will be ready, but possibly before."

The brand boss confirmed to Autocar that the designs of four new models has already been approved, which sounds like progress over where the brand was at just last month. The ultimate plan accounts for 10 new core models in the Fiat lineup, likely by the end of the decade. There's a new Strada planned for South America only, as well as four more new commercial models, likely for Europe, and then five more that are said to be global vehicles that could come to North America. Great news for Fiat Club America members

Stellantis is in the process of transitioning to a full-electric lineup, but it doesn't plan to phase out any brands along the way, at least not yet. That means its Abarth brand, which today serves purely as a tuner for Fiat, will still be around, even in the electric era.

We likely won't have to wait long to see the first electric Abarth. Autocar reported on Monday that Abarth is close to announcing a tuned version of the electric Fiat 500.

The latest electric 500 was never offered in the U.S. Launched in 2021, it's a redesigned version of the 500 that was sold here, and it's offered purely in electric guise. The most potent version has a 117-hp electric motor powered by a 42-kilowatt-hour battery.
