    Key FOB locking problems

    Good Day,

We purchased a used 2013 Fiat 500, 1 key/FOB 7 months ago. Everything seems to have worked fine till last week. I cannot unlock the doors using the FOB, only by using the key in the door. Car starts fine, all is well on that end. I did change the FOB battery several times in case the battery was bad, no help.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also where would be the best place to get a spare key/FOB? do I need to find a dealer to program the FOB?

    Thanks in advance,

    Dave

Welcome to the group, hemlock. Congrats on the new 500.

There have been several discussions on keys in the past. Your problem could be the fob is worn out. Have you tried seeing if the other buttons work, lock or hatch release? It could be as simple as the one contact going bad, which can be tinkered with once you get a new key. If the other buttons don't work, it could be a problem with the receiver on your car... or that maybe the fob's circuit board failed. As you know, modern cars have a chip, recognized by a "ring" around the ignition switch to recognize the key, plus electronics to activate the fob. The programming steps allow up to (I think it's 7) total keys to be recognized by the BCM.

We had a discussion on keys about a month ago, where to buy them. (click here for one of the threads) Depending on your city, you could search for a locksmith who does "laser cut" or "security" keys. Some of those shops have the equipment needed to cut and program a key. If he can't program the fob, check with your dealer. He might accept an outsourced fob and program it for you. Otherwise, it's a trip to the dealer. They'll use your VIN to order a precut key (around $185 last I checked) then need to program it. Programming at some dealers is $100, though it's a 10 minute job. My local locksmith wanted $179 to cut and program two keybobs, as I recall. I didn't use his service because he didn't like working on "European" cars. With the locksmith, it was a 2 day wait for a fob to arrive. My dealer said it was normally 2 weeks to arrive, but (at the time) was up to 2 months "because of covid".

It's wise to have a second key. If you lose the last key, I understand they have to replace the body control module ($1000+/-) plus the cost of 2 new keys.

    Welcome to the forum.

Before replacing any expensive key Fob. If you near any Fiat dealership, run you car there. It can be as simple, as a software glitch. The fob not talking with you car anymore. They can pull up a code, to fix the issue.

We lost the keys fobs on one of ours. You have to buy them in two’s. Around 3 bills from the dealership. The blades were cut from the manufacture. Another 150 bucks, for the dealership to pair fobs to the car.

Our Ace Hardware Carries key fobs for the 500x. But nothing for the small 500.

If all else fails you. Try this place, for replacement fobs.

Yeah, the kits come with 2 key bobs and a door lock. I was quoted a single keybob to match my car's lock.

I purchased a single key & fob from my local dealer with programming for about $200.

I was thinking, your key fob, is still talking to your car. You start it. You might have a issue, with the door lock receiver.

Yes, I mentioned the the receiver. Thinking on it, it could also be the servo motor, BMC or just a door lock linkage, but probably a defective fob. Having a second key would help diagnose if it's one of those. Since it's a 2013, I might also look to the dreaded hatch harness wiring. Shorts in that unit occasionally affect auto door locks, per a couple posts.
