Thanks for the info - my Renegade has the noisy diff problem, and I'm going to change the fluid (it's 58k miles anyway). The spec is SAE 75W-90 API GL5, but there's no info on whether or not to use oil with limited-slip friction modifier. The limited slip additive actually reduces static friction, and I've been waffling about it - a limited slip is also a wet clutch of sorts, but with a constant spring pressure whereas our diff has a controlled/variable pressure on the clutch plates. Also the noise occurs when the system disengages the clutch, and only in a narrow range of rpms (which implies some sort of resonance).

From what I've read the European spec is for Castrol BOT 720 Rear Locking Differential 75W90 Synthetic Gear Oil, which has the additive. I'm going to start with an oil with the limited-slip friction modifier.

You might want to check your rear wheel bearing. My daughter had a strange noise from the rear of her, Renegade. Turned out to be a bad rear passenger wheel bearing.

No, it's not a bearing, it's the classic grinding/vibration/rumble noise that afflicts many of the BU platform (500X/Renegades). It goes away instantly and entirely if you lock it in 4WD. From what I can tell it occurs when the system opens up the dog clutch in the PTU.

Changing the RDM fluid had no effect, and after thinking about it more that makes sense. It happens suddenly after cruising for a bit at more than 55mph or so - that would most likely be the dog clutch in the front disengaging rather that the wet clutch in the back. So I changed the PTU fluid too, and made it a bit higher viscosity to see if I could change the resonance or perhaps damp it out. I don't think that worked either (it still seemed to do it), but I did not drive it long enough to see if it changed at all.
