In other words, in order to keep a 500e running, it can require the following items in the car:
1) $49 lifetime membership AlfaOBD*, on a device that's always charged-up & in the car**
2) A proper ~$13 yellow adapter that isn't just a yellow-colored extension cable
3) One of the following***:
a) $50 OBDLink SX cable (& ~$10 USB-A adapter, if you're using a USB-C device)
b) $90 OBDLink LX
* You COULD just use the free "demo" version until you get a contactor glitch, as long as you're confident you can download the paid version from the roadside in the middle of a rainy night.
** If any of the car's users don't carry such a device, you can leave one plugged into the glovebox USB.
*** There are other compatible units, but they all cost more.

Sorry! I got confused by @smeg36 mentioning "MultiECUScan". I thought it meant the app, but it's just a yellow adapter that mentions the app in its description.
However, the fact remains that my experience doesn't match @smeg36 :
- My yellow adapter connects to my 500e with my OBDLink MX+ & did a Proxy Alignment with AlfaOBD.
- That very same adapter would NOT connect to my car with my Konnwei KW902.
