When I worked at a VW/Audi dealer in the early 1980s, VW had the worst recall record of anyone. We had 3 recalls to fix basically the same problem on Rabbits!
First it was the antenna gromet allowing water to leak on the fuel pump relay. Then they recalled to replace the relay. Then finally to replace the fuse box. Then pretty much all the cars got recalled to replace the valve stem seals. That was all in one year if I recall correctly.

I had a similar problem with my 1st Gen Scirocco. Back then, air conditioning was a port installed option. So they routed the condensate through a tube that ran through the firewall into the interior footwell, then exiting out the front fender. Unfortunately, this allowed condensate to leak onto the fuse rack. If you recall, the fuses were lined up in a row on a metal plate mounted under the glove compartment, with an "L" shaped bend on the bottom lip, forming a trough. The water leaked into the trough, and since the cigarette lighter fuse was always live, that would connect to the starter circuit, and if left in gear, the car would drive away by itself.

Good times. Great car, though. 1900 lbs with a full tank, Guigiaro design, hatchback practicality.

I loved the Scirocco. Always wanted one. I would take them out on my lunch time and break them in.

When I first was shopping for and the subsequent decade of ownership, people have always disparaged FIAT without any evidence. Is it an italian car made by Chrysler in Mexico? Yes, absolutely. Is it basically the same as any other car (Toyota generally excluded) ? yeap. They're all built by the same robots, many of which are *made* by FIAT.

I like the VW Scirocco too. Bought a 1982 Toyota Supra instead. Oh what a feeling. Japanese muscle car.
Bullet proof quality, never had a issue with that car.

Supras were cool, too, back then. I love the wide fender flared ones.
