    Broken Bilstein coilover

I installed a set of B14 PSS Bilstein coil overs on my 2013 Abarth 2 years ago and have loved them ever since (only about 5000 miles on them).

My wife took the car out on a bumpy road and when she came back, she said it was clunking and handling "weird". When I popped the hood, the strut top was completely separated from the rest of the strut assembly with a clean break in the stud visible. I torqued it to spec (41 ft lbs IIRC) and it had been fine since this incident.

Has anyone else seen something like this before? Is this a manufacturing defect or did I screw something up?

Just speaking anecdotally from what I see on message boards, but this seems to happen all too frequently. And this is a trusted brand that supplies many OEMs.

    Someone should blow the whistle.

Have you tried to reach out to Bilstein? They seem I like a pretty reputable company. I wonder if they would be willing to help out with at least a good discount on a single replacement.

Bilstein had an impressive response time, I've been chatting with them throughout the day.

Here's their response: "Thank you for including pictures of the failure. I can see that you are using a 500 Madness solid strut top kit. This was more than likely the source of your issue. Our B14 PSS kits are specifically designed to work with the durometer rating of the OEM strut mounts as is clearly shown in our installation instructions, link and image below. The solid mounts increase spring preload and put too much force on the stem, leading to the failure you experienced. Unfortunately modifications to our product or using it outside of our guidelines is not covered under our limited lifetime warranty.."

This is unfortunate. I'm thinking about putting the car back to stock at this point. 500 Madness probably should have mentioned this when I bought both the coilovers and their strut top kit from them

Another strut top, another broken suspension. I keep trying to warn people about buying these bearings (that don’t move in both axis), but here we are. I think it’s time that we get pitch forks and go after these vendors.

I haven't seen this happen with Konis. Are you referring to the CFPs??

Ugh... first I've heard of it (obviously). If Bilstein can find me a replacement corner I'll put the stock strut top mounts back on the both sides and call it a day. If they can't, well I'll have to go back to stock and be left with 3 almost brand new coilovers :P

I was super careful about using the right torque specs on everything so this is definitely something for everyone to be aware of. I won't even list the strut tops in the for sale section after reading this...

This has happened to a several people before, and EVERY one of them had aftermarket strut caps. Either the CFP caps or the older (no longer available) CPR Ron strut caps. They don't allow for the movement necessary of the strut and stress the strut, causing it to break.

Bilstein will likely not cover this (and rightfully to be honest) since it was a failure caused by a badly designed part from another vendor.

Yes. All of the tops with a single axis bearing will do this.
