According to your link this knob fits all Fiat 500 models with an automatic transmission. Can you show me how it mounts to an automatic shift lever?

    Hello Hermiabarth,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

This shift knob is held in place by a set screw on the bottom.

Once the factory knob is removed the new one slides onto the shifter and the set screw is tightened to hold it in place.

Unfortunately we don't have any disassembly photos, and all our FIATs here are manual transmissions for me to take a couple photos.

You will need to pry down on the chrome trim on the bottom of the factory knob, then there is a small retaining clip that needs to be pushed/ pulled to unlock the factory knob. Once the clip is removed the knob can be lifted off the shifter.

There are a handful of videos on youtube that show the removal/ installation of a new knob.

If you would like, please feel free to give Eric in our California Shop a call at 562-981-6800 ext: 109 and he will be happy to chat with you about replacing the knob on your automatic.

    Thanks again.

I do know how to remove the stock shift knob. Since you advertise that this knob fits automatics, I assumed you would be able show how to mount it. The set screw won't hold the knob in place on an automatic.

I had reached out to one of our Techs and just received some feedback from Eric, our Sr. Tech Advisor:

"With all due respect, it's not something that's commonly done, or commonly asked of us - though we have a customer who comes in for yearly service who has one of these knobs on his Auto Abarth, so I know firsthand that it can be done. Please forgive me if I'm being vague here, but I haven't done one of these in about 5 years.

If I recall correctly, the shaft for the Automatics is slightly thinner than the shifter shaft on the manual transmissions. It's not much, but something like maybe 1-1.5mm thinner in diameter. The meticulous way would be to run a thin metal sleeve to close the gap up, preferably long enough that it can keep the knob aligned more than 50% of the way down, so that you can use the set screw to anchor it without it kicking over to one side or the other. This makes sense if you have a mic to grab the diameter of the shift knob internally vs the diameter of the stalk, and a hardware supplier that can get you the piece you need.

The bootstrap but totally functional method here would be to close up the gap with electrical tape, kind of like the rubber or plastic toppers they include with universal shift knobs, so you can make them fit on any diameter shifter stalk. Figure out how many laps of tape you've got to make to get a solid enough seal without making it too difficult to ram down, then do a second run maybe an inch down the shaft. More if you have to, but two rings to close the gap and hold it steady should be plenty. Set screw should work from there.

Call us up at the CA office directly if you need any other help. Easier to bounce back to you that way vs relaying feedback to you through the forum.
    562-981-6800."

Hopefully that helps, if you would like please feel free to give him a call at 562-981-6800 ext: 109 and he can help talk you through the installation.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. The reason I asked is because I thought you might have a specific adaptor or sleeve to use. The easiest approach might be to trim some aluminum from a beer can to make a sleeve. I will tinker.

BTW I'm very pleased with the 50th Anniversary wheels you sent to me. Incredibly fast shipping and they look great on my red car!

That seems like a good way to make the sleeve as well.

Happy to hear you received your wheels! I was actually out in the shipping warehouse a couple weeks ago and pretty sure I was the one who strapped and wrapped those wheels.

I would love to add your photos to the website if you would be interested in sending me a couple pics!
