    Which Turbo Upgrade for me?

The time has come, I think, for me to upgrade my turbocharger. There are three viable options that I can find, and I was hoping for some advice on what I should get. I currently have an FMIC, intake, DV+, ported throttlebody, highflow catpipe, and 2.5inch catback exhaust installed on this car with an OFT stage 2 generic tune. I have a mechanical boost gauge installed and if that gauge is accurate, then my car currently has no problem holding about 24 PSI boost. It's not bad, but I want more speed and more power without too much lag.

The three options that I am aware of are 1446+ stuffed turbos, 1752 turbos, and one that SpeedMotive offers called the 1700s which is claimed to be the "biggest" and most powerful of the three turbos. I know that there are TD04 kits around but that seems like too big to me. I'm trying to improve my 0-60 more so than my quarter mile. I will never take this car to the track. I was sort of leaning towards a stuffed 1446, but if the other options are superior or not so laggy then I would like to know. Also, a few different vendors offer stuffers and I do not know if there is any major difference between the offerings. Eventually I want to upgrade my injectors and run E85 in this car fwiw. Should I upgrade my exhaust manifold to the ported option? Now would be the time to do it if I was going to make it happen. It's going to take quite some work just to get to the turbo! Do I really need to buy an install kit?

Anyway, I am here seeking advice, opinions, and input. Thank you.

I'm surprised that no one has anything to write about this.

I'm ordering a 1700s because it is the biggest bolt-on and prices are all in the same neighborhood.

Are you changing the exhaust manifold? Have you found a ported manifold or an aftermarket header?

Just my opinion, but this is a huge amount of work, and expense, for not much more benefit than a good tune would do. If you blow the motor, or have to do some major repairs, then I think it would be a good idea at that time. But I'm making 200 hp and 235 ft lbs of torque, with just a piggyback ECU. The car will pull with most anything on the highway and I'm always challenging ANYTHING. It's amusing to see the look on a Lamborghini guy's face, when he pulls only a few car lengths from 60 to 100. (there's an exotic car dealer 3 miles from my house). My Abarth is never embarrassed. And I have only a few hundred dollars invested. The other problem is that because the 500 Abarth is discontinued, it's going to become harder and harder to get parts and service for it. Much as I love it, unless it's going to become your life's work, I would think twice before getting involved in all this time, expense, and aggravation. Just my opinion.....

This thread is now a TD04 thread. It'll be much cheaper this way. I bought a turbocharger and kit.

Expect updates by the end of April, if ever. Man this place is dead. Ya'll can claim what you want, but the fact that the most active thread started this year (by far) is the one that I started in order to point out the deadness of this place to the skeletons in the peanut gallery serves as absolute incontrovertible proof that this place is, in fact, effectively dead. Say that it's not, and you are a liar. That was great, to be honest. Everyone popping in to confidently refute my factual statement, only to immediately disappear. I don't want to waste effort playing to an empty room. We'll see. Well, I'll see I guess.

No disagreement here but this is what happens when a car goes out of production. When I bought my 500 Abarth new, in Jan of 2013 I began to see them all the time. Now? I see one maybe once a year. And at the local Cars and Coffees, and car shows, I would often see several. Now? It's just me. I've owned probably 50 cars, in my lifetime, including some exotics. The 500 Abarth is my favorite. Europeans get it. 99.999% of Americans don't. The guys (and girls) on this forum are very smart people! But there are fewer and fewer of them. Oh well. Life goes on.

A couple of things. I have upgraded several turbo systems I've owned, so I can be a reference. I've also built a 2.2 flat four turbo (see pics). Let me ask if you have a dyno chart on your current setup?porsche550.jpgporsche550a.jpgporsche550b.jpgporsche550c.jpg

Dude. Calm down & stop being confrontational.

Why does it matter so much to you if this forum doesn't appear to be the busiest place on the internet?

I personally paid for a membership so I could (hopefully) ensure the wealth of knowledge in the posts, stickies & How To & Tech remain online. I have learnt a ton of really helpful things from those three sources

The guy that runs this site (& the regular contributors) have done an incredible job for years. How many posts have you made...ah, 35.

Try contributing instead of criticizing? Go & post on other peoples threads rather than just yours? That is all.

Good luck entering the world of issues & random CEL codes being thrown

    Do you want a refund?

A couple of random observations on why some threads don't get pages of posts.

    • Posting a thread with a large number of questions chases away people. Folks don't have a lot of time to answer in-depth, complicated questions. so they need to be presented in a way that makes it easier and inviting to answer.

    • All the questions have already been asked and answered before. People get tired of answering the same questions. Many times, the person answering the question is taking more time researching the answer than the person who just pops in and asks the question. One of the nice things about this place is we don't get a lot of members scolding others saying "search the forum!", but it is still annoying and people just won't answer and move on.

    • Formatting. Having large paragraphs turns people off. People tune out when seeing a wall of text. Break the sentences into bite size pieces.

    One of the big ones.

    • Many will blow off someone who repeatedly trashes the forum, then asks for help. People notice those who take more than they give.

Members here tend to help other members who are helpful, and supportive of the community.

As they say, if something is not satisfactory, be the change. Good luck with your upgrades.

So is the RX-8 forum I was a founding member of, which I joined before the first batch hit the Port of Seattle. So what?

We're an old car club now, and after nearly a decade, there aren't too many mysteries left with this car. People here have done it all.

500 owners have been EXTREMELY fortunate to have such a robust aftermarket, that a lot of more popular cars never had. Every product imaginable has been tried and vetted, and I certainly got tons of value from the hard core expertise here.

Now I have a great build that suits my needs perfectly, and everything works as it should. Can't ask for more than that.
