    Maintenance help

Good Afternoon! It's been a little while since I posted. I miss the forum but the new job has me much busier. I also just had a daughter a few weeks ago so time is a lot tighter haha. Enter the Fiat. A/C wasn't working this spring and coolant was low right when I needed an oil change so I took it to a shop just to get it done since I don't have as much time. Below is what they hit me with. Total was $2800. Seems steep to me but I haven't used a shop in years so I don't know. Quick check on Rockauto shows I could get a condenser for $60 ($150 or $250 from MOPAR) but I'd have to take off the front bumper which would be a pain and then still get it charged somewhere. Also it looks like I could get OEM axles for $250/ea but based on what I've read here, I may just need to replace the boots for what $30? And $240 for an oil change? No thanks. I'll stick the baby with the wife for an hour and knock it out for $60. Anyone have any suggestions or first hand experiences with axles or A/C condenser? I'll try to post the pics they sent. Sorry for the Wall Of Text.

Yep, they really stuck it to you on the oil change, but the rest seems in line with what a dealer might charge, probably less. I used a coupon at my dealer for 3 oil changes (w/in 2 years) and paid $100... normally around $60 each for the syn oil. (I don't see a need to pay extra for the "pleasure" of getting greasy.) Depending on year/model, a dealer's price on axles is as much as $650 each, unless they use rebuilt (which is what you'd probably be getting). I haven't purchased an alignment recently, but they can run around $140 locally, last time I checked; extra if they use shims or adjusters, which is fairly common especially for the rear axle.

That's one reason so many people prefer to work on their own cars. At least they didn't charge you for the inspection/diagnosis.

Thanks map, that's encouraging to know that it's not far off dealer pricing. They do charge a $130 diagnostic fee if I don't get anything done. I think I'll check one other shop down the street on the axles and see if they're any cheaper. If not I'll bite the bullet on that and then I'll just go without A/C until I have time to do the condenser myself. Might just have to use the "savings" to do an FMIC at the same time!

Just the basic Maintance at the top. Parts come out to $80.96. The labor was 147.92. They are charging you six bucks, for an oil drain plug, that is reusable, when using. the new washer. I surprise they didn’t change the air filter too.

You half shafts are leaking, they do need to be replaced. If your AC is working leave it, alone. Try a independent service center, for maintance on your car.

Try using Christian Brothers Automotive. They are all over the country. I think there are 13 locations, in your Atlanta area. Been taking all our cars there, for years. Reasonable price, friendly, and knowledgeable of all brand cars.

Scroll the map below to your location, for your nearest service department.

I agree, get a different estimate(s) by all means and maybe check w/ your dealer online to see if they have any specials. Most dealers don't, but that's the new "scam" at my dealer. They'll get you in for cheap service and hope they can find something wrong. It pays to shop around. For replacing the cabin filter, they didn't charge labor, but then want $600-$1200 labor to diagnose the simplest problem.

They didn’t charge him for a oil filter too.

Ended up having them do the axles since I figure it's probably about time anyway from what I read about our cars. Didn't really want to mess with that myself. Found another shop that was a little cheaper since I could buy the axles and supply them myself but it would have taken longer and only saved me like $75. I guess it'll be a hot spring until I get the motivation to do the condenser. But maybe I can manage an FMIC while I have the front clip off. Anyone got one for sale? Haha
