We’re so close to 50,000 miles, and now this.

So, we’re nearing 50,000 miles, and now the window’s acting up. Specifically the drivers side. What can be causing this? This car is 7 years old, but it shouldn’t be having these issues. I can’t find any other posts on the problem. The Windows make a groaning sound, and stops half way through the closing and opening process. I’ll try and post a video of it, in a minute.

Start buying window regulators and window guide clips.

I'd get some of the powdered graphite and apply it to the channels and edge strips. As weather strips age they get stiff and collect dirt (and in our part of the country, grow moss). With windows down apply a bit of graphite to the channels can help. If you can't find the powdered variety, a spray graphite will work but it's a bit messier. Repeat annually.

The window motors don't have a lot of power. You don't want to overload them or, as BDS says, you'll want to buy new regulators.

I'm on my second set of new OEM window regulators.
Now I buy just the main window clips and window channel guides to rebuild the window regulators.
Saves a bunch of money because the window regulators and tracks are just fine.

Get a can of spray silicon.



Leave the window all the way open and using the included wand, spray a good amount down both both tracks. Tape the wand to the head to prevent it from coming off and ending down in a track.

After spraying, run the window fully up and down several times. Repeat the spray procedure several times.

I've found that winter road salt builds up on the tracks and will cause binding while opening and closing. Liberal amounts of the spray will wash the salt away and let the window run smooth again. I've gotten in the habit of doing this every spring on all the windows in my vehicles as a preventive measure.

Doesn't stain or leave a film, even on the glass. Excess wipes up with a dry clean cloth.

I would use spray white lithium grease, on the window tracks. I’ve applied that product, on my power sunroof tracks too. Doesn’t take that much.

The White Lithium will actually attract and hold dirt. The last thing that you want on glass sliding in dirt. White Lithium is designed for a metal to metal slide contact in a damp/slightly wet environment.

The silicon spray, being light, flushes the dirt out and lets the natural fibers of the window channel standup and help support the window while leaving a slight film that doesn't attract and hold dirt. There's really no good lubricant that can be applied to window tracks, without attracting dirt, eventually making the sticking worse.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know WD-40 had that product. I wouldn't use it on my window tracks, but it should be great on door strikers.
