Annual Inspection Reveals an Issue

Took my car in for my annual inspection. They replaced the serpentine belt, which after 7 years, is probably not a bad thing, but when they tried to get a clean emissions signal, the tech said two modules weren't responding. He asked if I had replaced my battery, and I said no. He said to drive around for a few days and come back to see if it clears.

Understand, it's not throwing codes. Two modules are simply not sending a signal.

Does anyone have any color on this?

I would have the battery checked. When my battery went bad, the car had started having weird issues long before the battery wouldn't start the car. The cars are picky with power signal.

I tried to probe a bit, but I THINK it has to do with the emissions being within legal range. He issued a temporary inspection sticker until the car is looked at again.

Your State issued Inspection Report should say which Sensors are "NOT READY" and "READY".

I don't know what the State of New York says in regards to state vehicle inspections, but Texas only allows (1) NOT READY to PASS Emissions.

Depending on what Sensors are "NOT READY", will vary what driving cycles you have to do to get them to clear and be "READY".

Being how critical the State of New York is, especially in regards to anything they can tax the sh!z out of, you should have received an "official" inspections report stating which Sensors were "NOT READY".

These Sensors will need to be "READY", with only (1) Sensor "NOT READY" to pass emissions.

I had to drive over 300 miles at my last State of Texas Inspection to get the dang EVAP Purge Emissions Sensor to go Green as "READY".

I carry an Craftsman OBD-II Scan Tool in my 500 ABARTH, and as soon as I had a single "NOT READY" I drove immediately to the State Inspector and PASSed Emissions. I didn't shut the car off, and didn't pass Go.

We don't have stinken inspections in Oklahoma. When we did it amounted to a sticker replacement for $5.

It's not a bad thing. They check for pad wear, which could save you from getting a set of rotors.

Surprised they don't check for emissions.
