Forgive my ignorance, I have never had a running 500e. Do the charging post lamps only indicate while charging? They seem like that would be the last look as I close the garage door for the night.

Correct. Each will indicate level of the charge (20% per post).

Ya, the dashboard's charging lights show solid for each 20% completed, & flashing for the 20% it's working on.
The charge-cord's lights are solid when plugged into the wall, & the lower 4 flash in sequence while charging.
A much more accurate % of charge shows at the speedo's lower left while driving or charging (open left door or turn headlights on/off - I recommend the latter to save your contactors).
For my normal consistent driving I no longer even look at any of the above, except sometimes I remember to take a quick glance at the charger just to make sure the circuit breaker is on, or public charger is working. If I want to know SOC I just go by OBD on my phone or tablet.
GLpuppy: In other words, if I was putting a 500e drivetrain in another car, I could skip the speedo % & the dash lights, or mount them somewhere they don't even show, if they're needed to make the system work.
