Honestly neither are independent shops that specialize in BMWs. But at least they exist. I never did find an indie shop for my FIAT. Good thing it was rock steady reliable. =P

Which generation Mini’s 1st 2nd, or 3rd. The first generation ones, were plagued with issues. The creative staff were I work, love Mini’s. The 500, never caught on. A lot of them bought the first generation ones. Sold them after racking higher miles on them. The cost at the dealers repairs, were high. But they continued to be repeat Mini customers. Buying the next generation ones.

BMW/MINI did a great job marketing the car from the start. FIAT marketing is also great, but it doesn't seem like they ran enough clever ads to change minds.

The MINI Hardtop used to be one of the most configurable everyman cars but sadly most of that flexibility is now missing. It's a nice feeling to have a car delivered from the factory that is already unique to you. Something that appeals to creative types.

Sorry, I don't mean to be that MINI traitor guy or anything. They certainly have their flaws. I bought a FIAT because I loved MINI first.

Much of the Mini problems, according to Mike, is customer neglect... simple things like cooking an engine from not checking oil. JD Powers has the 2019 marked as most reliable small car, but in 2015 was 28th out of 32. I'm sure some of that is in improved reliability, some maybe because only a handful of cheaper small cars remain.

Reliable, but average cost of repairs is still higher than less reliable subcompacts... $850 vs $450. Of course one expects higher repair costs on the most expensive car in their class.

Since Mini’s are pretty common. There are plenty other independent service departments they can take there cars. I’ve been using good ones, for years. You think Mini service is high. Take a $14K smart car for service, at a MB/smart dealership. You treated like you own a Maybach, and pay out the pocket like you own one. Coffee and Panera bread is good there. You get to mingle, with all the sport athlete, doctors, and if you need a good lawyer. They will be sitting in the waiting room with you.

I just checked our city. We have 3 independent service departments that Specialize in BMW, and Mini service. There are options. There are a couple foreign Car service centers, that will work on Fiats. Basically the vintage ones.

You want to talk about neglect. My good friend worked for Lexus for years. Handled warranty claims. A doctor bought a Lexus, the engine failed. He tried to turn it in for warranty. Over 60k miles. Never changed the oil. Black Texas tea.
