Hey Mark, I’d return to the Fiat service department. Have them Try and fix the problem again. They should back their work. There should be a limited warranty on the service.

Good Luck! You might try a different filling station. Sometimes it has to do with the gas pump.

Hi, Mark and welcome to the group.

This is a problem that has plagued a few 500's since the earliest models. I'm hoping smark will post how they fixed a similar problem with his 2012. I do not think there is a recall on the cars, but there are a couple service bulletins, since it stumped technicians in the early days. Replacing the canister is/was a likely cause for this issue in many makes, especially with owners who top off they gas tanks. I don't believe it is the #1 cause in the Fiat.

The car is equipped with "rollover valves" which minimize fuel loss if the car rolls. There is one in the fuel pump and another at the side of the fuel tank, where the filler hose connects. The most common filling problem is the one in the side of the fuel tank. Unfortunately, it is part of the fuel tank and requires the tank be replaced for a permanent fix. The weight of fuel in the tube is supposed to open that valve, then it rolls closed again and fuel "crud" can cause it to stick.

Usually the valve can be freed by whacking the tank with a rubber mallet near where the filler neck meets the tank. Another solution is to use a tool to pop the valve free, either using a snake down the tank or as in the thread below. That is sometimes permanent and sometimes lasts only a few months. Here is more detailed thread.

This has nothing to do with the OP’s problem. My car is a 2012 500. I keep getting the message loose gas cap. Fiat replaced the evap canister. Took care of the issue now for 9 years.
