    A Basic Tire Question

    My daughter's Cabrio has a tire with a leak.

    A really S-L-O-W leak, as in maybe 2-3 psi a week. But it IS there.

    Can tire shops find a link that tiny or should I wait for this to get a bit worse? Or use a sealant?

    Guidance appreciated, as always.

    Look around the tire tread, she might have pick up a nail, or screw. Spray some soap water around the tread. See if you got any bubbles. That will be a good start.
    Look around the side wall inside and out for a puncture.

    Check the inside edge of the tread. My car had such a bad factory toe alignment that the inside edge of the front tires wore through in only 20k miles. Leaked very slowly but not repairable and the tire shop would not let me leave without replacing it.

    Excellent advice and I wouldn't wait. If, as smark says, it's a nail or screw, it might be repairable before the cords are damaged. If something is in the tire, it could let loose and lose a lot of air quickly. If you check it yourself, be sure to wear gloves to protect yourself from sharp edges.

    A good shop should be able to find even a tiny leak. In my brother's shop there was a half moon shaped tank filled with water he used for tough to find leaks- they usually became pretty obvious under water. I'd add one more thing to the previous excellent advice- if your daughter's Cabrio has alloy wheels there is a possibility it could be wheel and not the tire. It doesn't happen often but every once in a while you'll get a porous wheel casting.

    Its not uncommon either, to need a couple pounds every week or two as temperatures drop toward winter averages.

    other suspected areas could be a cracked wheel or the bead edge of the rim where pothole impacts can drive debris in between rubber and rim, which may lead to corrosion and leaking.

    if checking yourself try also increasing the tire pressure as you search.
