500e 12v Battery seems dead due to lack of use during COVID

Anyone know if the battery would just need a jump or should I try to replace it?

Why don’t you jump start your car, and drive it a little.

On a 500e, the battery should recharge itself from the main pack. I'd pull it and have it checked out at any location that sells batteries.

Ended up tryin that yesterday. Car drove fine around the neighborhood for maybe 5-10 minutes. Brought it home, turned it off. Turned it back on again and worked fine. This morning, battery is dead again.

Good to know. I'll probably take the battery somewhere today.

That's a good plan. If you have a 12V charger, you might slap the charger on it. I might pull a battery post first, just in case. I don't own a 500e, so I don't know for sure, but it could be safer.

As you know, the 12V battery is there to minimize complications. Most of the car's components are similar to the standard 500 so it's logical to use a 12V batt to operate lights, pumps, computers and such. The system replaced the alternator with a DC-DC converter to keep the battery topped off any time the key is turned on... and probably when the pack is being charged. Batteries may lose a small amount of charge from sitting, but all modern cars have a continuous small drain, keeping the electronics alive.

As for your battery, if it is reaching the end of its life, the small drain could rob it of its remaining charge. Once a battery drops to around 11.5V the cells can be damaged and sometimes won't recover 100%. IIRC, the onboard computers operate around 5V, with fairly stupid circuits dropping voltage to that level. When the batt approaches 12V, the computer voltage can drop below minimum voltage they need to function. By operating the car for 10 minutes, you gave the 12V batt a partial charge. Had you left it on for an hour, the battery may have gotten nearly a full charge. Charging rate, like any good charger, is kept fairly low to avoid over stressing the 12V battery. You could try plugging the car in overnight to see if the 12V will also be charged. A volt meter will let you know its current charge state before and during. If it's charging, you may see 12.X V before and 13.5+V when the car is plugged in.

It's still a good idea to have it checked. They'll do a load test and compare the batt to a new battery's capacity.
