Hello From Oakland! New 500X 1.4 owner

    Hi Fiatistas,

I just bought what might be the last brand-new 2018 500X 1.4 MT left in the US. I've been wanting one of these since they came out in 2016. It's at a Chrysler dealer in Coos Bay, Oregon (they got it off a Fiat dealership that gave up the franchise) so I'm going to head up there with my fiance next week to drive her home and tour around a bit. I went to college at UO so I'll take her around Eugene on the break-in drive and drive across to Bend before heading back to the Bay. Other than adding the armrest and a cargo cover that I already bought right off the bat I'll keep her stock initially, but some light performance mods are definitely in the future. My first car was an '82 X1/9 and I'm an Italian dual citizen, so glad to be back in the Fiat fold!

Congrats! Glad to hear of another 2018 turbo X. They are quite rare!

When I did my research, and found out they got rid of the manual version, I started searching for one with a back up camera and Bluetooth. While I searched, there was rarely more than one for sale across the US at any time with these options.

I was lucky to find mine just 4 hours away with these options (and more).

I told myself I wouldn't modify mine for at least a year...I barely made it a month before changing a few things.

Thanks! I actually saw a new 2018 turbo X with the preferred equipment package in Tacoma that sold juuuust before I bought mine. But yeah, I searched long and hard for a 2018 for the better infotainment system. I'd love to hear what you have done. First on my list I think is replace the plastic steering wheel with a leather one (lots of wrecked Renegades around to farm the wheel from on eBay), and then maybe a cat-back exhaust and 17' wheels.

The steering wheel was very simple. One of the simplest yet more satisfying things I’ve done. Also figured out a Momo Nero shift knob fits and complimented the wheel well.

I’m well down the exhaust rabbit hole right now. There really nothing commercially available specifically designed for the turbo. I figured out the Magaflow for the 500X is only 2.25” pipe. Not worth the money and work to go up from roughly 2.1” OEM. Their Renegade kits are way less expensive and strangely 2.5”. But need some coaxing to fit right. I had to have my local shop build a B pipe since there are none.

I was not happy with the stock throttle response, but refused to pay $300 for a Pedal Commander, etc. I got a Roar Pedal, which I am sure is a Chinese knock off, but it makes the X SO much more enjoyable to drive. They are around $150 and well worth it, if you are unhappy with the throttle response.

My local exhaust shop deleted my muffler for $80. I am blown away how good this sounds. It has zero drone and even gets a couple of pops every once in a while. It is a pretty deep tone, but in a quest to make it sound more like my Abarth did, I will be installing a hi Flo catted downpipe, which I have in my garage.

I also installed a Forge turbo blanket. I had a different brand on my Abarth, which didn't fit great. The Forge went on perfectly and looks awesome. There will be some that say this is not necessary, but here in GA, I believe it helps. Plus it is a cheap addition and pretty easy to install. Not so easy on the Abarth.

I have a Forge Atmospheric blow off valve in the garage, awaiting install. I had a Go Fast Bits diverter valve and blow off plate on my Abarth, and though it worked fine, I regretted not just stepping up to the Forge.

Lastly, I have an AEM dry flow drop in air filter. I haven't installed it yet, as I am trying to decide if I will just step up to the Eurocompulsion intake system.

After this, I will be working on getting a flash tune. If a vendor isn't able to get something soon, I will be getting a Chipbox from Lorenzo at Speedmotive to hold me off. Had one on my Abarth and loved it.

Then, it will be suspension time.

Great to hear about some of those mods! I watched a youtube video of a guy switching his plastic Renegade steering wheel to a leather one and it looks pretty simple. I could not agree more- that touch surface is huge.

Good to hear also about the throttle response improvement— I'll have to see what I think after break in. Maybe that will be the first thing to look at. I know a lot of modern stick-shifts suffer rev-hang on downshifts (the otherwise magical Civic Si is a prime offender) and I'll be looking to deal with that too if that's an issue for me. I'm more concerned about responsiveness than out-and-out speed.

I haven't noticed any rev-hang. But it is interesting that the SI has it while being direct injected....I thought that was supposed to help with rev-hang, according to R&T:

The Clutch Delay Valve is the culprit on the shifts. I just installed my delete from Deyeme Racing last week. Miserable to install but Oh it shifts so much better.

The pedal control will be in any flash tune so I’ve ignored the boxes. My local shop is tuning mine next week. So we’ll see.

I just looked on the Deyeme Racing website and didn't see a CDV for the 500x or Renegade. I know there was an earlier thread about Deyeme wanting to produce one. Did you adapt the CDV for the Dart or am I missing something?
