    2012 FIAT 500C thumps when slowing to a stop.

    I have a 2012 500c, AUTO. 160K. Car has been running like a top until today. This afternoon, the car started making this thump when slowing to a stop. Driving in suburban traffic, so I was up to 35 MPH or so. Seems the thump comes when the car is going from 2nd to 1st.

    I feel this in the front end. This only happens in automatic mode. When I change it to manual mode, it doesn't do it. Car ran perfectly yesterday.

    Is my transmission cooked?

    I would recommend taking your car to a mechanic or to the dealer to have you gearbox looked at. I would recommend towing it, but if you can't then drive it in manual only so you don't hurt the car further. Every thump will slowly hurt it more and more.

    Don't panic yet.

    It could be you just have a failed/failing CV joint on one of your front axles. It's easy to check: With the car parked and running in Park, turn the wheels to the left all the way. Get out of the car and look behind the driver side wheel where the axle penetrates the center of your wheel. If the accordion-shaped rubber boot which protects the CV joint is torn, there's your problem. If not, check the boot at other end of the same axle at the transmission end. You may need to stick your head closer into the fender well with a flashlight to see it. Do the same thing on the passenger side after turning the steering wheel all the way to the right.
