    Yaris Bites the Dust

The Toyota Yaris, which was actually the Mazda 2, which was a fun little car, will be discontinued.

It looks like the Honda Fit will be the only truly small car sold in this country.

It's ridiculous, but this is where we are.

Funny thing. When VW brought the first Beetle over, it was seen as a cultural icon, a giant "F.U." to chrome fins and 20 foot long cars. It started a revolution.

We need another moment like that.

These car companies can't afford to sell these models here anymore. They need to maximize their profits so they can afford to build electric cars that nobody wants to buy.

We won’t get the new platform, Honda Fit here. Honda now sells more of the larger HRV here.

MINI is pretty much the only company that makes small cars like that, even though the 2dr Hardtop isn't very small anymore, Americans still call them tiny. If the Beetle didn't get pulled from the U.S, the 500 & 500c would probably still be on sale because the Beetle is was pretty much started this whole small car thing. I wish we had at least a final edition of the 500 here, maybe it could've been called the Finale Edizione.

I admit, I haven't followed small cars since buying the 500. It doesn't surprise me the Yaris was dropped in the US. EU will still get them, but it's getting too expensive to import. Honda has hinted that this may be the last year of the Fit, too. I figure the Yaris' entertainment system, out of the 90's, steers buyers away.

Toyota sold less than 2000 Yaris' in the US last year, though sales in Europe have been steady for the last 2 decades. That's down from 100K sold in 2008 (last recession/depression). They sold 170 times as many Camry models last year. As I recall, the hatch model was a Mazda and the sedan made by Toyota (a different car). I don't know if that's still true for this year's car. I'm hoping the announcement was premature. Sales in March/April stripped most inventory from the lots, already at last year's sales figures.

If Honda keeps the Fit, they could be the only game in town. Toyota/Honda realize they need cars at both ends, econo and hot, to draw customers. If they drive away in a "shiftbox" model, they are likely to have your company on their mind as a first choice in 3 years... and you can deflect buyers into the nicer Camry/Civic once they arrive. "Only $40 extra with our 7 year financing plan."

It looks like Yaris is being upsized into the RAV4 class... at least for Europe. There's also hope for the high performance Yaris GR in the US. Priced high (~$40K), a lot comes in that package. About 300 lbs heavier than the 500 Abarth, it has AWD and an extra 100 HP.

Before VW stopped production The beetles sales number were really good still. Why better then the 500. The beetle was about being retro. The 2nd generation Beetle isn’t exactly a small car. Very expensive too. The first generation Mini, was about being small. I believe Fiat tried to follow that foot print. If Fiat would Offr here the 3rd generation 500e. I would be at the studio, with a deposit.

The 500 was Destined to be on its way out. Fiat never update the dated the platform. There Really was reason, for any repeat Fiat buyers. Fuel economy isn't as good as other small cars from Japan and Korea. No final edition 500, would save that small car here.

Today’s NA consumer is only Interested in crossovers SUVs and trucks.

I forget you guys are young. I was talking about the ORIGINAL car, not the "New Beetle" retro model.

Manufacturers cannot force people to buy cars they don’t want. And Americans don’t want small cars.

If any small car could be sold here, I think the 500 could still pull it off. The style, charisma, and entire aura around it transcend the whole econocar /US dynamic. It obviously wouldn't sell in Corolla numbers, but there are still people that want small cars and are turned off by the same old same old. Though, that would require more effort than is being expended now. If Fiat were a stand-alone company here that didn't have to share resources with 11 other brands, that would help.
