    Emblems

When I retired at the end of 2018, I gave all my collector's cars, new in box, to a Christmas donation box.

Since then I've been collecting Fiat emblems. That seemed to be an easy task, just a dozen or so designs shown online. Then I realized Fiat may be the most reproduced car on the planet, on both sides of the old iron curtain.

These were some of the originals... and so many more to go.

Nice! That's a neat hobby. I also like collecting car emblems and badges.

Have any from the Fiat family you'd like to show? I was happy to grab an original Steyr (though from the 4x4) and have a couple USSR logos, a PAL and Polski coming. I might have located a Tofas and my SEAT badges were in the other box.

I haven't seen any difference in the S American emblems.

Good idea, I'd have to dig some up. I have older ones from the cars I had or worked on and stripped.

I should be so lucky. There were never many Fiats in town. The best I have is a couple from the 60's and 70's. The faded aluminum badge is from an X1/9.

Most badges have books or articles telling what to look for, but Fiat got skipped. So.... I make my best guess and (usually) look for ones with lots of "character".

Yep, that chart was my goal. How hard could it be to find a dozen badges? I soon found a LOT more emblems, even if you don't get into badges. It's OK because many of those emblems can't be found in my price range, even as copies.

1991 came in 2 styles (black and later blue), 1968 came in 5 or 6 styles I've seen, 1965 came in 3, as installed by Fiat (Loreli). '65 also comes in Abarth and other recognized names, plus aftermarket customs. Then there's the companies Fiat set up or companies that copied Fiat models. NSU-Fiat, Neckar, SEAT, ZAZ, Tofas, Polski and so on and each labeled in-country models and export differently. 1904 came in different colors, silver/black or brass/black, usually replicas, but the US Fiat of the same design is impossible to find. It becomes a treasure hunt.

I thought I'd pick up 3 to 6 emblems and be done. Then I was locked in the house for 4 months with a credit card.

For your entertainment, here is the press release on the current Logo that debuted in 2006.

A new logo for the Fiat brand: it debuts on the Fiat Bravo

In recent months, the Fiat brand has implemented a new strategy, which is underlined by the many new products that have been presented: from the Croma to the Grande Punto, the Panda and the Fiat Sedici, and they will soon be joined by the new Bravo. As Luca De Meo, Fiat Brand Manager, explained, “In this important, dynamic context, we have decided to acknowledge the progress achieved so far, by changing our logo, as a tangible sign of the new impetus that is projecting us towards future challenges. This is why the new logo will make its debut on the front of the new Bravo, before being gradually adopted on all Fiat models.”

Created jointly by RobilantAssociati (an agency specialising in Brand Advisors & Strategic Design) and the Fiat Style Centre, the new symbol is derived from the famous shield that decorated the front of Fiat cars from 1931 to 1968, with the vertically elongated letters of the word ‘FIAT’ standing out against a ruby red background, encased in a chromed round frame. It has a three-dimensional effect which conveys an idea of technology, Italian design, dynamism and a strong personality, while it also harks back to the round logo (white wording against a red background, surrounded by laurel leaves) that identified powerful, high performance Fiat models for many years.

The essential, strong new logo therefore conveys ‘ongoing change’, a sign of the past re-read in a modern key which is particularly representative of Fiat today, a brand projected towards the challenges of the future but also proud of its historical identity. The two main elements of the new logo (the shield shape and the colour red) immediately bring to mind the Fiat 524 of 1931, which was the first to use a rectangular logo that blended into the new grille, designed with stylistic but also aerodynamic pretensions, in the shape of a shield with vertical elements.

The new FIAT logo is designed to sum up the mission of an Italian company that for over one hundred years has been building good-looking cars that are accessible and capable of guaranteeing the best quality of everyday life.

The 1968 logo, reminds me of those stick on italic numbers. You buy at the hardware store. For mail boxes.
