FIAT 500 Automatic Trans Back up lights

In the MY FIAT app it says that my mom's car needs to have the PCM reprogrammed so the back up lamps illuminate on time. Another way to check this is to put your car into reverse and see how long it takes for the lights to turn on. For us it's 2-3 seconds after we start moving. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. My mom almost got HIT in a parking lot because THE LIGHTS DIDN'T ILLUMINATE UNTIL 2-3 SECONDS AFTER WE WERE MOVING BACKWARDS. THIS SHOULD NOT BE A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION NOTICE. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL. This notice is for ALL MY2012 - MY2015 FIAT 500's EQUIPPED WITH THE 6-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. If your car has this issue, I would highly advise that you take it to your studio to get fixed immediately. I'M DISAPPOINTED THAT THIS IS EVEN HAPPENING, JUST MAKE THE CARS COMPUTER DO THINGS PROPERLY FROM THE BEGINNING! You can find it online as FCA Customer Satisfaction Notice #S20. They put it under RECALLS on the app, so why isn't this a recall yet?

It is done for free at the dealer. It's basically a recall and registered owners were notified back in April 2016. All new cars have issues from time to time and updates. In a perfect world inhabited by perfect people it could be assumed that cars would turn out perfect, but in the real world, that's why they all have service departments and warranties.

Also, hopefully, you're waiting a few seconds before hitting the gas pedal to be sure you're actually in reverse and not crunching gears or breaking the transmission. I had my update done, just because. No issues here.
2013 Fiat 500 Sport AT, Xpel Ultimate Clear Bra, 3M Crystalline Window Tint, Black top stripes, Black "500" (wide) side stripes. Fiat "500" Stainless door sills by Mopar. BlueTooth music streaming. OBDII BlueTooth Torque gauges streaming to smart phone. BF Goodrich Sport Comp II tires, STS rear sway bar, Euro+Drive NA 500 Tune, BMC reusable air filter and Spare Tyre with cover.

Blast to drive! 25 years newer than last car!

Once we put the car into reverse we look around and then start moving. The problem is that the lights dont turn on until a couple seconds after your moving. We will get it fixed soon. The reason I say it should be a recall is because they didnt mail it to people, or at least not us. We bought the car in late August of 2016 so that could be why I just heard of it. It seems like theyve sorted it out on the 2016 and up cars.

My mom is very skeptical about it even though it’s a safety issue because she is afraid the studio will damage her car.

I never knew there was an issue either. I do my oil changes at the dealer and did it because it was free and they brought it up otherwise I would have said no. I checked my back-up lights whilst there and just shrugged my shoulders and said sure since I'm here.

Owners that were in the database were notified.

    From FCA:

"All involved vehicle owners known to FCA are being notified of the service requirement by mail. They are requested to schedule appointments for this service with their dealers. A generic copy of the owner letter is attached.
Enclosed with each owner letter is an Owner Notification postcard to allow owners to update our records if applicable."

The difference is the severity of the issue between Recall and Customer Satisfaction Notification. This is all done under guidance with the NHTSA

When you buy any used car, you should register as the new owner with the manufacturer so you can receive notices. There is normally something in the owners/warranty manual or their website. Manual can be purchased at TechAuthority if needed, by the way.

Don't be skeptical. The manufacturer will not waste time coming up with a solution if it weren't important. It is important to go to the dealer at some point especially when a car is new because there are frequent updates to software which can eliminate issues and improve the operation of the car. It can be the difference of a reliable car and one that has niggling issues. Some people never have problems and others seem to always have something pop up. Many of the folks with issues bring their cars to jiffy lubes/ cheapest unqualified places to save a buck. `

They should still be doing it 4 years later right? We didn't get a notice in the mail because we bought the car 5 months after the notice was sent to people. She didn't "register" as the new owner with FCA, only with the DMV. Because FCA doesn't know if we are the new owners or not, will they be able to perform the repair?
