FIXED: Suspension Clunk (Holding down the strut top)

A few weeks after installing my coil overs, I started getting a bad clunk from the passenger side. Not speed dependent, and I couldn't induce it with steering input. Mostly it would happen over small bumps when the suspension was unloaded. I figured out it was the top of the strut moving around due to the way that top end is held together. Replacing the strut top helped, but didn't quite get it. Adding a Corso Forza top mount ended up being the ticket. OF course, I made a video of my adventures, including video of the top end of the strut bopping around. Enjoy

Fantastic video. I just put a set of the CFP Hats on Chris’ car. I already like them but now after the video I’m even happier.

Did you notice any difference in handling from the strut tops alone?

Do you mean just the replacement OEM parts on top of the strut assembly? probably did less than a mile in that configuration, so I really don't know. The clunking was reduced, but not gone. I really don't trust my "feels better" reactions. I've got $70 in parts and 2 hours labor that says it better feel better, and my brain wants to confirm how smart it is for spending the time and money. My guess is that issues with the strut tops are behind a lot of fiat thunks. I think we need an aftermarket solution for this part, because if it is a common problem on stock cars, it definitely is going to have problems on lower / stiffer cars. I doubt we get one (small volume, obsolete car), and I'm not currently brave enough to try making something, because at some point you stiffen things up enough that you start destroying the frame around the shock tower. Does anyone know if Europe has solved this?

I wasn’t clear. I should’ve asked if you saw a difference by suing the CFP tops.

As far as any difference or aftermarket solution in Europe, keep in mind that their front suspension is a bit different (different caster angle I believe), so it might not be applicable here. I’ll try to find a vid explaining how to reeplace the front springs and IIRC, the top was different, it was eccentric.

Ok. Yes, I think (giant grain of salt here, as mentioned previously) it stiffened everything up, and the turn in feels noticeably sharp. So I think so, but with the pandemic, no racing yet to say something more definate.

I like it. I have some bad clunks as well and I'm gonna have to try this once my wallet agrees with me. Also had me laughing with the stripper comment.
