Angry Fiat500 2012 sport in Drive, would not move from lights (transmission failure?)

Rolled up to red light in drive. It turned green. Car wont move. Revs are going up, as if engine is disconnected from wheels.
Drive light on dashboard was on. I tried switching to P twice (it made strange noise as in manuals when you wont put the gear properly). Went back to drive, no change. Shut down engine, turned back on, nothing.
Cop came, asked to switch to neutral. I did, he pushed the car, then I switched to D and it worked again.
    Wth?

This is not the shifter cable issue. I had that one twice before.car is at 141k miles.
This is extremely dangerous, i had warning lights on, people would still honk and drive at me with 60mph having to go on the side to pass me.

Took it to Fiat Dealer Service. They were able to reproduce the issue. They didn't see anything wrong with cabling etc. They did ~400$ transmission fluid replacement. Half of fluid was missing and it was dark. They say it must be the transmission and replacement will be like 4500$+ (cost + labor).

    Any thoughts? Other ideas? Recommendations?

Putting the car in neutral reset the solenoids that control shifts to the neutral state. Then when you selected D, a potentially hanging-up solenoid went into gear correctly.

If indeed you were low on transmission fluid and what was left is dark brown, it's a better than even chance you're looking at a new or rebuilt transmission eventually. That said; I've seen automatic transmissions take a lot of abuse, as in running completely out of fluid, and still after putting in clean fluid at the correct level give you another 50,000 miles.

If after the fluid change and fill the car is still running fine, I'd just drive it till it won't drive anymore. Then go get a low mileage used transmission from a previously rear ended car.

Yeah that sounds about right. They said the transmission was damaged inside that it had metal pieces that got into it.
Ended up in Transmission rebuild. Fiat Dealer Service asked for $6000.
Independent transmission repair shop asked for $1500, ended up being $3125.
Transmission rebuild 1705$ (with computer) + New Axle (225) + Labor (795) + Main seal (196.04 to engine).

Yes it's always good practice to replace the engine rear main seal, automatic or manual transmission while you're in there. That's a common failure, and you don't want to pay for the transmission to be pulled a second time.

So it looks like the shop that rebuild my transmission actually lied to me.
I drove up the curve (don't try that at home), went under car and saw silver paint on my transmission, that would stick to my fingers (after 24h of car being ready to pick up).

They didn't even wash it. It is sprayed over dirt (you can see marked in circle on the picture).
    spray over sand.jpg

I was able to remove the fresh paint and read the VIN number that matches 2016 500L that was front smashed in 2017.

I went back to that shop (they have 4.7/5 on google) to ask about the origin of that transmission. They keep saying it is the one they took out of the car.
This is impossible as I have the car since 2014 and never did any transmission work on it.

Went to Fiat Dealer to diagnose the car, they found that, they found TCM sprayed over on top as well, they found vibrations at 3600RPM and kick right before the car stops.
They tried to update TCM unit, but it would show as unrecognized in the Mopar system (this happens if there is a VIN mismatch).
They swapped it back with my old TCM and now the kick right before stopping is gone, but it kicks on every upshift now. Vibration didn't go away.

Other proofs (like VIN swap was not enough) that transmission rebuilt has not been done:
In the box of parts they supposedly replaced there is:
    -Torque converter
    -Valve panel
    -TCM
    03.jpg
    and:
(wet) clutches, radial seals, and rubber o-rings
    Leftover parts in the box.jpg

Missing: the band and all of the roller/ball bearings and their races
    thanks @fast_dave

If you are talking about a Fiat 500L MPV, the final drive ratio is different than on a 500 hatch or Cabrio model:

    AISIN SIX-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Optional on Fiat 500L Easy and Trekking
    Standard on 500L Lounge
    Gear Ratios:

    2nd: 2.37
    3rd: 1.56
    4th: 1.16
    5th: 0.85
    6th: 0.67
    Reverse: 3.19
    Final-drive Ratio: 3.683
    Overall Top Gear: 2.47

It sounds like they put in a used transmission from a 500L?

    yes,
    used transmission is from:
    2016 FIAT 500L EASY
    4 DOOR WAGON/SPORT UTILITY
    1.4L I4 F DOHC 16V
    GASOLINE
    FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
    (RL is reconstructed)
    68271184AK - 2016 - DF4 (6-speed heavy duty)
    RL271184AK - 2016 - DF4 (6-speed heavy duty)

    My car is
    2012 Fiat 500 Sport 1.4 Multiair
    68247754AB - 2012 - 1DF1
    (old marking for RL154159AA)

Now here is the interesting part. That foreign TCM with foreign transmission was smooth at shifting, besides that downshift at the very end when you almost stop the car.
Putting my 2012 TCM on that 2016 transmission removed that kick on stopping, but now it is changing the gears completely wrong, shaking the car on each shift.
If it is like you say that gear ratios are off then my TCM won't work on this transmission.

So I am trying to think what my options are from here.
Also wonder if there is a way to get gear ratios by VIN, because that 500L is 2016 Sport, not 2015 Lounge.

They are the same ratios posted.
