Where's Waldo ? (The case of the missing Abarth inventory)

    A Little Background

All of us vintage Fiat-Abarth guys knew about FAZA and Al Cosentino. This was a Mecca for all things Abarth then, and Al's occasional overstuffed catalogs were more thorougly read than the holy bible. And it was a bible of sorts for us. Where else could you find a Nardi manifold for a 32DCD Weber carburetor? -- or an Abarth free flow exhaust system for a n Abarth 750. Those were good times and today they are just warm and wistful memories of many yesterdays past.

The stories of Al Cosentino and his moves from Carmel NY to Florida and then to California are fairly well known in the community, but to a much lesser degree the story of what Al left behind in New York, and what happened to the stash vintage Abarth parts remains a mystery.

Today there is a very active multi-national vintage Fiat Abarth community a couple hundred strong. Most of us are now more vintage than our automobles, but still we persist. Both individually and as a group our goal is to keep these old machines alive and well and to share and enjoy the automotive madness that made thse little giant killers the legends that they have become. It should come as no surprise that parts for these cars are hard to find these days and that any information where to find them would be a treasure.

    The Mystery

When Cosentino left New York and moved to Florida, the FAZA NY operation fell into the hands of one Andy Smith. From there the story of FAZA New York and the supply of vintage Abarth parts that were there is reduced to speculation. I've heard the parts went froy NY to Long Island, then to Watkins Glen, and then to Australia. Wht's truth and what's sheer rumor is unclear.

So --- here's the question: Can anyone share some information about what happened to the FAZA inventory, where it might be and how it came to be wherever it is. The question has been asked numerous times on our vintage forum and so far has not resulted in any substantive answers. Perhaps with our combined memories we might be able to piece together the story of the missing Abarth inventory. Please help if you can.

Chris -- is this worth a sticky?

    Yikes !!!!!

That says a lot. But Cosentino was never one to mince words. It appears to say that Al took his inventory to Florida and then shipped much of it back to Smikth in Long Island. This rings true to the previous stories I've heard. But this -- wow --- it tells a different tale .

Once Smith got the FAZA goodies, I believe he sold some of it to a fella that lived just outside of Watkins Glen NY. His name was Lars Motensen. I met the man at his place many years ago and bought a set of springs and a gas tank for the 750. At that point Lars was moving to Arizpna and looking to sell all the parts he had. I lost track from there and have no clue where those parts ended up.

It does appear that a lot of the stuff Smith got was ruined from sitting outside in the elements. That's assuming one can believe everything Al was saying.

So the trail gets a little warmer. Perhaps some of our readers have some further insights to share. I'm reaching out to some of our west coast owners to see if Fumico is still around for comment. Someopne out there must surely know how to contact her.

Chris, thanks for the most interesting bits of history ( including that in your PM) fascinating stuff. Can I have your permission to share it with our 750 forum people?

I purchased an old 750 Berlina from someone claiming to be a mechanic for Al It was complete with the old swing up brackets ti hold open the engine lid. It was full of Abarth gems A billet crank went to CA to be put into a Jolly, that was a fast ride when completed. The black 3 gauge cluster went to Greg Schmidt on one of trips to CA in trade for coolant lines for front radiator conversion of my 850. A pair of lowered leaf springs went to Krause and Hinds (sp) in trade for a special 850 transaxle. An original 750 exhaust went in a trade for some shop gear, The Abarth front grill went downunder with a bunch of other parts. I still have some weird parts to go through, like a 600 block with a large bore.

Well thats where some of the parts went. I could never get Al to sell me straight on anything, there was always some sort of story and I'd just walk away from the deal. Chris O, and Greg were my main parts suppliers, Bayless in Atlanta on occasion. Chris and Greg were easy to deal with, Art a bit less so, And then there was Al, you never knew what to expect especially if Al and Greg had booths in the same show, It was fun to watch ... at a distance.
