Yeah, garage #2 isn't all that uncommon. Diagnostic fees at dealers are common because would come in, have it checked, then go for a cheap repair. I guess it's catching on at other shops, too. What isn't proper is not catching additional problems once its on the rack. That's how they make more money. So they blame the customer because they screwed up. I'm used to #1's diagnosis; hear a problem then put it on the rack or no charge if you pass on having it fixed. It's good #1 could get you back on the road again.

Did he say which bearing(s) were bad?

Good post on the TP link, a year's supply left. I restocked the supply cabinet, not knowing CV was coming. I try to keep 3 to 24 months of non-perishables; easier to buy several at once.

Passenger front wheel. It was also the passenger front control arm that was replaced at mechanic #2. But as I said, lesson learned for me (stick to favorite if slightly more expensive garage), and the car is driving smoothly again.

Glad to hear you're stocked up on TP!

No surprise that it was the passenger side. Passenger side bearings fail first on all cars, not just Fiats, because of getting splash from the curb and gutter. I've also read that average life is from 75k to 150k. I've seen Swedish cars with more than 400k on wheel bearings but that's unusual. Wheel bearing life is a lot shorter in areas with bad roads and on cars with stiff shocks and springs, too.
