    2013 Abarth Clutch Issues

    Hello all -

My daughter's BF has a 2013 Abarth, purchased used three years ago. He commutes about an hour from Philly, no issues. Until Monday. On Monday, when he was in stop/go traffic, the car would not go into any gear. He pulled off to the side, tried for a while, and nothing. He could get in into gear when the car was stopped, but starting (clutch in) in gear made the car stall. Towed to a local shop, they said 'new clutch'. I said 'hmmm'. The car is now in my driveway. I can get it going, by starting with the car in gear and giving it some gas. I can shift it, by pressing at the right RPMs. But - when the car is in gear, the clutch is slipping like crazy - like it's not fully engaged (or disengaged, whichever way you want to look at it). So - The clutch feels like it isn't engaging enough when trying to get into gear, and once in gear it slips.

Based on what I know, this doesn't sound like 'a new clutch'. Happened suddenly, car has maybe 60K miles. BF says he checked the VIN, and he is not eligible for any recalls.

Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated. I can get it up on a lift tomorrow to start poking around.

    Thanks,

    Jim

If you can't get it in gear when the engine is running, but can put it into gear with the engine off, that could be a clutch hydraulic system/release bearing issue. If the car is in gear and it slips, that sounds like a worn out clutch. Either way, looks like a new clutch is in order which usually comes with a new clutch release/slave cylinder, which would kill two birds as long as the clutch master cylinder is good. If you are in there, changing the master out may also be a good idea, too if it isn't too much of a hassle.

Agreed with Fiat500USA's assessment, but it could be one other item. If a spring fails in the pressure plate, it can have similar symptoms. You might see the problem once you get it all apart.

I'd bet on his assessment, and the diaphragm sprayed brake fluid on the clutch disk. Did you check brake fluid level?
