    Axle Seals for 500 sport

Hi all, long time creeper but first time poster.

I have a 2013 500 sport cattiva manual. I bought it with 20 miles on the car in 2013 and just clocked the 137,000 mile mark. Recently I noticed the telltale smells of burning gear oil and sure enough, it looked like the driver side seal was leaking, but both driver and passenger seals were leaking. I purchased the seal for the drivers side and passenger side from Mopar. The driver side fit perfectly. It is a seal that is inserted into a plate. Part number for the driverside axle seal: 68137042AA

The passenger side. Not so easy. I purchased the part number designated by Mopar to fit my car. It did not fit. You can imagine my frustration after removing the axle and old seal to find that this seal that "fits my car" did not in fact fit my car. Defeated I returned the old seal with plenty of retaining compound back into the trans. Not before taking pictures of the size of the original seal to compare and find the correct seal.

The wrong seal (too big) :
    68137034AA
This is the correct seal according to measurements :

I don't want to pay 80 dollars in shipping, so bought this seal that is the same measurements: https://www.avxseals.com/Shaft-Oil-S...SABEgJATPD_BwE

Hopefully this cheap shipping option works. When it arrives I will attempt to install it and finish the saga.

Hey whats up Steve. I have a 2012 Fiat 500 sport with 106000 miles on it. I see your car has 137000. I was just wondering what problems/ maintenance you have encountered after 100k to get 137000 miles?
Mommy didn't buy the Abarth so I drive a Sport

    Hey Cosk,

Besides the obvious tire, oil, brakes. I have changed spark plugs and coils, timing belt and water pump at 120,000. I know the book says 152,000 but.... As well I have changed all my wheel bearings. They started going bad between 70,000 and 90,000 miles. Currently I am getting error codes for the crankshaft position sensor and the knock system. The knock system code is from a misfire I was getting in the fourth cylinder. The Air Oil separator above the top right of the engine had a leaky o ring that was having oil drip into the cylinder. Very easy fix. Switch out the o ring and cleaned out the separator. I replaced the knock sensor with an aftermarket one, but still have the code. As well there is a second code now for the harness. I am not particularly excited about that but I will be ordering a new knock sensor with the crankshaft position sensor soon. From what I can tell, that o ring is an incredibly common problem, I experienced mine around 130,000. Certainly worth checking to see if you have any oil around the top right of your engine. I don't have a stock airbox so its super easy to check. Another reason to mod your car!

Honestly this car has been awesome getting to this point. Once I get the trans all sealed up, I don't see any reason why this thing wont make 200,000 plus. I would love to start a high mileage fiat club, but first I need the high mileage!

Hopefully the saga has ended. I received a passenger side axle seal from AVX Seals. It cost me far less than buying from mopar(which was the wrong size), or from overseas and paying the heinous shipping cost. It was the same diameter inside and out but the original has a flange that the avx does not have. I don't think this is that big of a deal. I have put a gas tank(roughly 400 miles) on the new seal, and I haven't noticed anything smelling, as well there are now new spots in my driveway. If there is catastrophic failure I will post here. So if you need a new seal for the passenger side dont pay those crazy prices!

My axle seals started leaking at about 142k, spent $160 dollars for the two from the dealer but there was some bearing wear I wasn’t aware of, this caused the new seals to fail again after 3k mi, which led to bearing failure and catastrophic trans failure, cracked housing. I bought a used unit w/30k mi from same year and model, got it installed with a new clutch assembly and now I can’t get 1st, 2nd, or 5th with the shifter, it will go into rev without the lookout, cables all appear to be fine so I am puzzled! There is just no good dyi info out there for these cars! Any ideas??

    Hey Brooster,
Sorry to hear about the failure and now the troubles with the used trans.

Is there grinding when you put into 3rd, 4th or R? - Could be the master cylinder has air or low fluid.
Does the clutch feel loose or spongey? - Could have leak in master or slave cylinder.

This is from my limited experience. I will ask some mechanic friends as well. I hope we can resolve this.
