    Unable to Use Public Chargers

I recently punched a used 20016 500e and a 2019 Smart EG ForTwo. The Smart uses the standard J1722 plug and receptacle. The 500e however does not, it uses a plug that has pins that extend from the plug body so that a standard J1722 with its shroud around its pins will not make the required connections. (See photo below).

My questions are, did Fiat come out with a replacement receptacle?, Can I buy a standard receptacle and replace the one on my 500e? Any ideas?

The 500e is compatible with J1722 and comes with a J1722 charger. Perhaps your car has been modified.
Can you post pictures of your charger and the charging port on your car?

First, a small typo - it is SAE J1772, not 1722.

To me it looks like the plug (from the charger) got modified, or actually more like it was damaged.
It is missing the ring around the pins.
Also, the pins appear to be correct.

I highly doubt someone would go through a trouble to replace the socket in the car since it uses J1772.
There are not too many standards in the USA... so it makes pointless to change into non-1772.

I agree with this. Looking at the photo again, my guess is that the shroud/ring broke off the plug and is now embedded in the car's charging port.

    WOW.
I did not think of that.
    That explains a lot!!

So to take it out - two tiny drill bits, sink them on opposite sides and slowly pull.

    Thanks all,
That's exactly right, it was the shroud rom the plug that was blocking the port. I was able to remove it with my fingers as I believe it did not break off in the port. I can see no signs of damage. It appears that it was removed rom the plug and placed there by the previous owner, maybe to protect the "fragile" orange port.

I have obtained an "upgraded" port made o more durable material. Unfortunately I do not have a shop manuals. I was able to locate a manual series on-loine but this seems to be more of a electronic code troubleshooting manuals. Does anybody know off where to access shop manusls and/or step-by-step instructions for changing the charging port shell?

Do you mean that you obtained a replacement J1722 plug, like this: https://www.jpson.com/product/j1772-...ing_p1032.html. A Fiat shop manual would not have any information about repairing the plug. A dealer would simply replace the entire charger. I don't know if the original plug comes apart. You can just cut it off at the cable and wire it to the new one.

Where did you buy the car? Essentially the car came with a broken charger, and I would ask the seller to provide a good one.

No, I obtained an updated, more durable port. I've read on more than forum complaints about how easily the orange port breaks. But I bought the port while I was thinking that the last owner had installed some type off one-off port. Instead he had disassembled his plug and installed the shroud in the existing port.

So at this point I have a port ready to go iff and when the orange port fails . The plug is fine as is without the shroud.

I have located factory service manuals on eBay once they've arrive and I get a chance to review them I'll let you know what I think.
