You have to file a police report if a damage is over $700.

Otherwise, you just exchange the information about the insurance companies, take photos, and leave.
This way you may not get an accident report on Carfax.

Once, you decide to sell your car, every source will tell a prospective buyer to check Carfax.

That's not true at all, there is no limit for filing a report
And honestly who cares about a ding on a Carfax, I would much rather document an accident no matter how minor for my own protection. People can sue you no matter how minor an accident is.
And do you honestly think most people wont buy a car because an accident shows up on a Carfax report? If that's the case you might as well scrap a sh*t ton of cars and trucks out there.....Carfax is a tool and not perfect in its reporting.

Update, my estimate just came back $1350.
They want to replace the bumper and the lights, and exhaust tips.
There is no sonar on the car.
    The ER couldn’t find anything.
I have a police report, and will see what happens.

Information to Carfax, comes from a reputable collision center. Not from any police report. You could damage you car yourself. There’s no police report. The collision center, just reports it’s been fixed. $500-$10,000 etc. Doesn’t matter the cost.

We had $1,200 worth hail damage. Act of God. The collision center turned in the repair, to Carfax. After we sold the car.

    The police will report 100%.
A body shop may report or may not.

Police never turn in information, to Carfax. They only report the traffic accident information. The repair shop, body, or Mechanical. If reputable turns that information into Carfax.

My wife got into a similar wreck with her 500 Sport. She got hit in the back and pushed into the car in front of her at a stoplight. Fortunately, the airbag didn't deploy, or the car would have been totaled. I drove the car to the insurance adjuster and they wrote me a check for $2,200 and told me to take it to the body shop of my choice. I took off the front and rear bumper covers to inspect the structural damage. The 'bumper' under the rear cover was bent, but it didn't damage the unibody. Went on line and ordered the front and rear fascia (plastic), and the rear bumper assembly, and front grille. I paid a local body shop $350 to paint the front and rear plastic, transferred-over the marker lights, bolted up the new rear bumper, and you couldn't tell it had been hit on both ends. Total cost? $823.00

so did you get to keep it? meaning the money. well right now I am dealing with a similar issue with my 2014 Jetta TDI. if I get enough money I might spring for a 124 or a 500X. I had such a poor shooping expercince that I just dont know if I want to keep it. Plus my need changed.

Did you look behind the bumper?
Are there any damages to the frame?

An estimate is just an estimate.
