Open Flash Tablet WIN - Proyecto Estúpido Has Been Tuned!

    Proyecto Estúpido Has Been Tuned!

Who is the lucky tuner??? Read on for details.

So as some of you may know, I gave up on using an EC tune on the 500T Automatic. I'm sure they could have made a good tune with dyno time, but I'm not exactly nearby to the EC dyno. The tune I had just couldn't put down power, made less power than a piggyback, pulled timing massively and was closing the throttle under boost. I didn't go to Tork because.... I have have burned some bridges that can't be rebuilt ... so I looked around for other options. MTD responded to one email then stopped responding. sooo....

A little background info: Proyecto Estúpido is so named because I bought it as a salvage car with rearend damage, probably bid too high, spent money fixing it, spent money on a tune that didn't work, spent money chasing issues it didn't have, spent more than I spent on the car with various stuff, and all this when I have an Abarth already.

    So who got it tuned?

Shiv from OpenFlash Performance Inc., come on down!

It works, was painless, and was easy.

Step 1: Bought a used Open Flash Tablet on Friday.

Step 2: Arrived by Monday morning. WTF Fedex moving quickly.

Step 3: Pulled my original ROM Monday evening and emailed it to Shiv.

Step 4: Got an email Monday afternoon saying he doesn't have an OTS tune (expected as much as the 500T / Auto is a rare combo to be tuned). Since I am a secondhand buyer, I had to pay a tuning fee of $100. Totally reasonable. Paid it Monday evening.

Step 5: Tuesday evening I had a Stage 1 tune in my gmail. Too late for me to flash it, I had to wait.

Step 6: Wednesday evening, unplug the piggyback, run the tuner. After years of flashing with Dimsport, sitting for nearly 30 minutes, I was SHOCKED and AWED that it took NINE MINUTES to flash this car. NINE ****ING MINUTES. Wow.

Step 7: Test drive. Peppy. Not FAST FAST but quick. After a couple of loops around the block I went for some measured runs. Results below.... But basic observations: Zero hesitation. The throttle closing issue from EC tune isn't present. Car runs smoothly to redline, shifts the auto relatively quickly, and stays in boost for the next gear. Did I say ZERO breakup or hesitation? Boost only hitting about 20-22 peak (70 degrees ambient, 120 degree intake). However with the previous EC tune it couldn't reach 18psi on phase 0/695 without throttle closure and stumbling. On OFT, it's consistently hitting 20-22psi without hesitation or issue. It also pulls in the top rev range without significant dropoff. This is a WIN.

Observations: The tune is very conservative. However, it WORKS and that's the key point. It also seems that the tune doesn't touch some of the variables that the EC tune did. Specifically the transmission still shifts like a 500T not like an Abarth. Ie, no pops on shift like an Autobarth. These are very minimal negatives. Stage 2 may help somewhat, and I may ask for that after making sure this is stable.

---Issues---: I may have a laggy turbo (wastegate flapper leak possibly?) so roll-out is still a bit slow but it's always been like that. However that shouldn't affect topend performance significantly so long as the car is making the requested boost, which it does. It only affects spool time (several people have had this issue). It may be one reason my overall 0-60 times aren't as quick as they should be. Time out of boost is pretty bad from a stop, and since it's an auto, I can't drop or slip the clutch to get revs up. Power braking is very limited on this platform, I do it a little, but only for a split second, to avoid heating the torque convertor or trigger limp mode.

Instrumented tests: I use an OBD digital display (forget the name) to monitor data in real time. One thing it can do is timed 0-60 and 1/4 mile runs. I don't have anywhere safe to do 1/4 mile runs nearby, but 0-60 is possible so that's what I use.

Here are the times I've recorded. Again I think all of these times suffer a laggy turbo on the bottom end, so with a new turbo they may be able to be increased further:

    9.5 Second: STOCK 500T AUTO - consistent

8.5 to 9.6 Second: EC TF695/Phase 0/Phase 1/Phase 2 - All of these tunes acted the same. I speculate they were all hitting the same torque limit or other issue. Best Run: TF695 freshly flashed (no adaptation) 8.5 second 0-60. Average run (any EC tune above ended up around this after adaptation) 9.0 to 9.6 second 0-60 (inconsistent). Throttle closure and hesitation.

7.9 Second: Racechip RS - Pretty consistent. Mid-setting on dial. Intended for use on Abarth, not 500T so 500T settings are less than ideal. But NOTE: This was faster than EC. Smooth, consistent, but flat power curve.

7.3 Second: OFT Stage 1, 5 miles of adaptation. Consistent over repeated successive runs up to 122 degree intake temps. Zero hesitation, no breakup, Good power curve to redline - still pulls past 5k RPM.

Overall I'm VERY happy. I know some people have reported issues with Shiv and OFT, but he had my tune to me VERY quickly, especially considering he hadn't seen my revision before.

I'm hoping that a Stage 2 tune and XDF (custom tuning file) won't be much trouble.

That said, I take back anything bad I've said about Shiv or OFT. Even if I don't get those things, for what I paid, I have a much better tune than I had previously.

I know a couple of you on here have a lot of recent experience with OFT and moved to Tork for various reasons. It seems I'm probably gonna be stuck with OFT on the 500T, which doesn't sound that bad. I may want to pick your brains about what y'all know.

Glad you had a good result. The openflash is so superior to any ec tune in my opinion. Pretty sad they cant make a 150 or 160whp stage 0 type tune even perform correctly on a car.

Top bad you felt you've been too much of an ass to get a tork tune. The openflash at least delivers what it promises, but doesnt touch tork.

For a while at least, he had an option where trash talkers who finally break down and want his tune can do so for an extra $1000.

Yeah I'm not playing that game. John either wants to deal honestly and make sales, or he doesn't. His choice. Not gonna rehash things that were said; his history is well known. He had every right to refuse the sale, but I had hoped he'd rise above drama. I would have publicly given him credit for doing so. W/E.

As far as EC, my Abarth still has an EC tune and I'm very happy with it. It makes a LOT more power than this OFT tune is even thinking of. For some reason, however, Toby just couldn't figure out the 500T Automatic in a reasonable time. More revisions might have solved it but I wasn't comfortable with continuing to test tunes that were essentially guesswork on my daily.

The very first revision from Shiv worked better on this T than any of the EC revisions. So at a minimum, I'll stick with what I have.

You mention using an OBD digital display. Could you tell me which you use? I'd love to use something like the Alpha, but couldn't get any help with what bits I'll need to make it work.

Not here to rehash old arguments. All I will say is I have never posted anything that I didn't then and continue to believe is true.

Now, kindly stop trying to pick fights. There has been way too much if that. A lot of people no longer post anything about tunes because it always ends the same way.

EDIT: Additional note. John never offered me such a deal as Saponetta mentioned above for the $1000 extra. I wouldn't have asked either. So the comment that I wouldn't play that game was hypothetical based purely on the supposition that such an offer was made, which it wasn't.

As I said, I burned my own bridges. No need to be snarky about it.
