    Here's some random info on the X1/9 I had handy. I'm sure this stuff you'll know about as you have Italian cars of this era, but I'll mention it for the sake of anyone reading.





    Prices of early cars with the small bumpers are rising. They sold these in America in 1974.

    One common issue on early 1290cc cars is wheel bearings. They didn't have great sealing and don't last that long. I've done many wheel bearings on these cars back in the day. They are pressed in and can be a drag because there is a threaded collar and not a modern snap ring that retains them. I recommend getting the Fiat tool to unscrew the retainer. It can be done with a punch, air hammer, etc., but if they get destroyed the retainer has to be chiseled out. There were some improvements over the years, but the big improvements was when the 1500cc cars came out they increased the size of the wheel bearings. Those last much longer. They also got rid of the threaded retainer at some point and went to a snap ring that I can't remember right now. The snap ring also can break, too, so that's not great either. LOL









    In America, from 1975 the X1/9 had these ladder style bumpers. Still sporting the 1290cc engine, there were many detail improvements. A rule of thumb is the newer the Fiat, the better as they constantly worked bgs out of them. The electrical systems are also better. Fiats back in the day had many, many relays. Grounds are a big issue. ALWAYS install an extra ground strap to the engine on an old Fiat. One of the secrets to a reliable Fiat is to clean every ground on the car, which is especially true now that the cars are old. I would recommend removing every connector you can find and cleaning them, too. The old cars electrical connectors don't have any weather protection on them.











    The 1500cc cars came out in 1979 and sported better looking bumpers and a torquey 1498cc engine and 5-speed, making the cars more mature and athletic. Lots of improvements automotively speaking. Early 1500 cars had a carb and fuel injection was an option. Desmogging and putting on a big carb really turns these cars on. The fuel injected cars are consistent runners and are in another category as far as reliability. Pretty much set and forget.

    The Bertone badged cars are the pinnacle of reliability and ownership X1/9 speaking. If you buy one to drive and don't want to tinker, these are the ones to get. Better rustproofing and the fusebox uses American style fuses.

    A couple of things to look for are the trim needs to be intact and all there. Bertone badges are a little hard to find and expensive. Also make sure the Radiator and Fuel Tank or in good shape. Budget changing them if they aren't in good shape. Running rusty or subpar ones will ruin your ownership experience and you will not enjoy the car.

    Kelly gave excellent advise about letting the car run and see if the gauge rises. It should stay in the middle or a tad higher and the fan should come on. Drive the car aound and check if the temperature rises close to the red. Cooling issues can really take the enjoyment out of the car and will be expensive to fix.

    Besides cleaning all the grounds and taking apart and cleaning electrical connectors (especially high load ones ) change ALL the hoses including all fuel hoses. The engine compartment in these cars can get hot and are confined. Like any old car, a leaking hose can cause lead to disaster.

    Try to buy a California car! Also, Midwest-Bayless and FiatPlus are good sources for parts. My first new car was a '74 X, it was love at first sight and the only major impulse buy I've ever made. I own a nice '81 now that runs great and still looks good with over 200k miles on it.

    i owned a 1979 Fiat X1/9 and currently own a 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider which you are are ready familiar with. One of the main reasons i purchased my 4C is that i felt it was the natural progression from the X1/9 which i really enjoyed. Please understand that everyone says the X1/9 is slow (approximately 75 hp) and it is but all cars were slow back then and the X1/9 had better performance than any of its direct competitors. The X1/9 handles brilliantly and the engine is very robust and the packaging is outstanding for such a small car with.a rear truck almost the size of our 4C's, a front trunk that holds quite a bit and stores the removable top with out interfering with the available space and a spare tire behind the drivers seat (or was that passenger?) i miss my X1/9 a lot and would love to have another one. if it were for me, i would have a 1979 or newer one as they came with the larger engine and 5 speed manual. one big downside is they eat rear tires and finding tires in the correct size are almost impossible to find these days. Also best tip of the day, buy the best you can find. Prices have been jumping up the last year so don't think you will get a great example for $7,000 anymore. probably double that amount to be in the ballpark. good luck finding your X1/9

    I had a fuel injected, '81 x-1/9 for 14 yrs. Put about 120k miles on it. I cried when I had to trade it in on a Subaru wagon.

    No rust.
