    Valve cover leaking

I was feeling lazy today. I Was going to call crawl under the car. Perform a oil change. I decided to run it by a repair shop here in town. Christian Brothers automotive, We’ve used for years. I’ve been noticing oil drips, on my garage floor, the last couple months. Really small ones, nothing major. After 8 1/2 years of ownership, my first 500 issue. The shop noticed my valve cover gasket, is leaking. Not terrible. But leaking. They said at the moment, really not worth replacing, unless it gets worse. Which it will.

To replace the valve cover gasket, looks like a pretty easy task. Except, you have to remove the intake manifold, cause of this one tab. These 2 guys just cut the tab off, over the valve cover. Kind of a stupid design on Fiats part.

I wonder if that tab is to minimize stress on the intake manifold. If they were aluminum that tab wouldn't be there, but maybe Fiat is concerned about plastic being brittle? I wonder how well it'll hold up over 10 year's use w/o the tab. I look forward to hearing how much time it saves to cut the tab off.

If you dont cut that tab off. Your going to have to remove that intake manifold off the rear of the engine. I kind of wished, I asked for a estimate now. The leak, isnt that bad. If oil start to fill a spark plug hole. That would short out the coil pack. Will just wait and see. I thought I had a leaky CV joint.

I shared that video with my Nephew, He owns a 2018 Abarth. He thought that was crazy to cut of, the manifold tab.

I'm glad you dug that vid up. If I ever have to have it done, I'll check how the shop does the job.

Yeah, I'd give them a call for an estimate. One guy mentioned his dealer wanting $850 (if I remember correctly) for the job. That seemed high but, if pulling the intake, makes sense. (But I could see a mech taking that shortcut.) Intake manifold gaskets are rather odd for the 500. If I'm seeing the right parts, they have 4 neoprene seals, so parts cost would be $150 DIY.

I just did the valve cover gasket this past weekend on my 2013 Abarth (2014GQ motor) and there is no tab on mine. It was a metal bracket with 2 nuts on the intake and one bolt to the cover. Every video I have seen with the tab was a NA 1.4 not turbo. Hope this helps someone .

Based on the pictures, I don’t see a valve cover gasket leak. I see seepage from the transmission mating surfaces.
