    Intermittent Airbag Code

My son has a 2012 pop and his airbag indicator turned on the other day. The display will say something about an airbag failure. I have a code reader and I pulled Code B01081B: Front Driver Sidebag - Circuit Resistance Above Threshold. Is there a known fix (connector..etc) for this issue? I cleared the code but it did return later that day.

I did find something similar in the search function, but the site would not let me reply, only make a new post. I apologize for the repeat question.

You can get airbag codes if the wiring under the seat is damaged or the connector is unclipped. Other than that, I have no idea.

My guess would be a failing clock spring in the steering column. It provides power and control to the airbag.
Is he having intermittent issues with other controls on the steering wheel too?

Either way, I don't recommend trying to work on an airbag issue in your driveway. A mistake could be very expensive. You should take the vehicle to a dealer or independent shop with experience working with air bag assemblies.

FYI, I had an intermittent air bag light on another FCA product, and what fixed it was a new battery. An old battery especially under cranking load lowers its voltage to a level the computers 'don't like'. My battery voltage which should be 12.75 volts on a good battery got just below 12 V (key on engine off). The new battery fixed it. On my 500 in the middle of summer the car started blowing hot air with the AC on. I determined the HVAC selector actuator was not working right and then realized I had a bad battery. New battery, no more hot air.

I'm finding this to be the case on all cars from the last 10-20 years. On VW products, the factory style scan tool will see that some modules reported being low in power. A friend's Fiat was displaying a bunch of warning lights. AlfaOBD pulled up no codes. But when he was ready to leave it wouldn't restart in my driveway. I have a Midtronics load tester that showed the battery was bad. It doesn't seem to take much to spin these little engines to life, so there are probably a bunch of them out there with really marginal batteries. My 2012 still has its original battery at 100,000 miles.

I think Kelly's advice is good too. Even if you find a bad airbag connector or clockspring, I suspect that it will take an advanced scan tool or AlfaOBD/MultiECU Scan to turn off that airbag light on the dash so you won't really know if you have repaired the problem until you scan and reset. At least that's how it works on the other brands I own.
