    Fiat 500 1957-1974 Diesel engines

    hello guys,

I am writing a paper on the diesel cars and I am wondering what diesel engines have been in the fiat 500 and in fiat in general for the USA market and euro market?
I know the modern diesel have nice engines that fiat has made, but I am wondering about the older ones. Also I would like to know what things fiat has done to help diesel engine advance.

Fiat is a leader in Diesel engine technology. Fiat invented modern Common Rail diesel technology for passenger cars. Regrettably, they sold off that technology to Bosch in the 1990s. Fiat re-invented it with MultiJet 2 technology which offers substantial improvements and enhancements over the original technology. Unfortunately, due in part to VW's dishonesty and politics, diesels have been blacklisted and we will likely never see any of this promising tech.

Some other info on Fiats and diesel engines you may find interesting:

1907: Fiat builds its first marine engine, a diesel fueled, four cylinder unit.
1926: Fiat builds its first diesel-electric locomotive.
1940: the Fiat 016 locomotive exceeds 160 kilometers per hour, breaking the world speed record in the diesel engine category.
1953: launch of the 1400 diesel, Italy’s first diesel-powered passenger car.
1963: Fiat 9012 S marine engine goes into production, at the time, the worlds most powerful diesel engine with 32,500 horsepower.
1987: the world’s first direct-injection diesel engine for passenger cars is developed. The Croma turbo Diesel is the first car in the world to have a direct injection diesel engine fitted as standard.

Thanks for this post, I long for a USA world where fiat can offer a full line of products where you could buy a fiat 500, 500L, 500x in choice of electric or gas or diesel. Let the people have choices.
