Broken shifter lever. Has this happened to you?

Pulling up to a stop light, I stalled my 2013 Abarth. "Did I forget to put it in neutral?" I grabbed the shifter to change gear and it was all floppy. Lifted the trim to see what was going on before the light turned green, and found the shifter was broken! (See picture).

I have 92k miles on it, a short shift adapter, and drive it like I stole it, but WTH?

Hasn't happen to me but have seen it posted before. Apparently the neu-f short shifter puts undue stress on that stamped metal arm. That stamped metal arm is pretty flimsy.

Looking at the picture ,it looks like the base metal beside the weld broke. Maybe a bad weld that made the base metal brittle or under cut weld that cause a stress point.

I feel like people a few years ago were having similar issues when the short shift adapters were coming out. Can't remember if it was on the forums or on FB groups that the discussions were happening. But with the adapter and you say you drive it like you stole it....I'm not surprised it broke.

Well, I replaced it with a Craven Speed unit, and love it, although the CS shift knob is a bit uncomfortable.

That's what I was thinking. If you look at it from the other side, the brake is right along the edge of the weld.

Easy enough to use a cheap die set from Lowes, cut threads on the shaft to 10x1.25mm thread pitch, and order a custom shift knob in that size from americanshifter.com, twistedshifterz.com, or amazon. Just make sure if doing Amazon or eBay it has a brass threaded insert and not set screws (they fall off constantly) or "nylon" insert, which becomes floppy after about 3 days.
