How do refill the ac, can't use a standard hose/can from the auto store. Is there a special size, am I missing something?

If it's 2015 or newer it has R1234yf refrigerant. That takes a different sized fitting - you have to buy R1234yf equipment. It's also quite expensive refrigerant.

They sell the R1234yf recharge kits on amazon. Gas is also available on Amazon now. If you do handle this gas be careful, its flammable.

Since my system was opened (engine replacement) I'd need a vacuum too ... may look around and see what I can find.

Also definitely don't need 4 cans of the stuff unless you're planning on leaving an unfixed leak!

Yes, the Fiat 500L uses the new global standard refrigerant R1234yf.

During some work in the air filter area of my engine bay, I knocked the sensor that's attached to the high pressure A/C line hard enough to open the line. This very large and tall sensor is attached to a super thin metal hose and is in a vulnerable position to be hit/bent while working in that space. Fast forward a week later, my A/C is dead and the high pressure hose around this sensor is covered in compressor oil.

Went down to the auto parts store and bought an all-in-one refill can/hose combo of R134a. Since I bought my 500L with a replacement front fascia, the factory sticker noting the R1234yf requirement was MIA. Spent a fair amount of time trying to figure out why the fitting from the R134a can would not fit the car. Eventually I turned to Google and discovered the new refrigerant type used in our cars.

I then ordered an R134a to R1234yf fitting adapter from eBay and a couple extra cans of R134a and oil. Fixed the hose, evacuated the remaining little bit of R1234yf, and proceeded to refill the system with R134a using the adapter. Used a little less than two cans of R134a to fill the car and achieved ice cold A/C once again. The air conditioning has continued to work just as well as it always has two months later.
