FINALLY!! Big turbo time... and a built engine :)

So I will be documenting the Abarth 124 built engine/big turbo build in this forum. This turbo is a Garrett G25-550.

    BDD86AD6-2795-47B1-B580-104C6FA51BED.jpg

It is rated as a 300-550 hp turbo by Garrett. The exhaust housing is the small 0.49 A/R unit so it should have a very reasonable spool time. At the very least, it will spool faster than the TD05H 16G on my old 500T (TD05H was full boost around 3500-4000 rpm depending on the tune).

The block I had assembled a while back. It is CP Pistons, Carrillo Rods, deleted oil squirters, APR head studs and the head is ported a polished cylinder head, stiffer springs, radius polished valves and a modified multiair brick.

This build will easily hit 300 so the real goal is 400+

This will be attempted on the stock cam initially (want to know the limit of the stock camshaft) and then we will move to replacing the cam. Aside from the cam, this build is only going to take a couple days so I will report back frequently. The full story will be on my YouTube channel and I'm sure John from Tork Motorsports will be dropping some good info over the next few days on social media.

The engine is about to come out of the car. We hit our first road block. Not a huge deal though. The 124 and 500 blocks are different. The engine mounting points are not the same and the saddle is different. The 124 is being sent out to the machine shop on Monday with the internals from the existing block for a quick build. It will only delay by a few days. In the meantime, the turbo kit is being built up today. For clarification, the G25-550 will not bolt to the OEM manifold. Just like on my old 500, the 124's manifold is having a new flange attached, being ported and then coated.

Here is the new turbo next to the stock GT1446 for a point of comparison.

Here's the new ported and polished cylinder head. This head was originally being made for my old 500T.

I was a little concerned about the head gasket but a buddy of mine in England came to the rescue and suggested the Biposto head gasket. Its middle layer is much thicker.

The blocks being essentially the same, this worked perfect.

Just prepped the turbo compressor and the valve cover for powder coating.

Once these are in the oven, John and I are going to start tearing down the stock 124 engine and the built 500 block so the 124 block can get built on the quick.

So the engine is out! That means tomorrow we're dry fitting the twin turbo Ferrari F154 V6 engine for science (and to take measurements for the QV swap). John managed to pull it out in a couple hours.

The "Tork Orange" turned out great! Here's the turbo mocked up on the car. John and I were shocked at the fitment.

Tomorrow (Sunday) is manifold day and John will start fabricating the intercooler pipes. While he's on that, I will be tearing apart the the 500 block to pull out the CP oversized pistons and Carrillo rods and then the 124 block.

So after a couple delays (John’s shop has been incredibly busy while I’ve been down for the build), the engine is going in today. The engine is complete.

Ok. How to build a 300+ hp Abarth 124 Spider 2/3 is up on YouTube. This high compression forged engine loves the G25-550!! This car is turning out to be BAD ASS. Oh yeah, there are some definite differences between the 500 and 124 engine blocks?!
