Check Stop Lights Message on Panel.

Condition: The subject message appears at start time, turns off, and the stop light icon (bar with two lights hanging down) remains.

All three stop lights do not light up when brake is applied. Checked right brake lamp off the car and that works. Assumed at this point that problem is probably not the bulbs (all three are not lighting).

Checked the only two fuses that mention "stop light", F37 (Stop light switch, Instrument panel node) and F51 (Stop light, radio sw, climate control, clutch, rev gear, parking sensor, rear cam, sunroof) and they are not blown.

Need help and advice at this point. There must be a brake switch somewhere? Hydraulic or mechanical? Somewhere near master cylinder? Pedal?

    Thanks in advance,
    Bob

Bob, it's a mechanical switch down at the pedal cluster under the dash. Just replaced one on my non-L 500 Sport. $2.33 at RockAuto for an original Mopar switch, about $9 at my great local dealer and in stock.

Mine started to act up in cold weather and I think it was the contact grease getting thick and dirty. I did an autopsy of the old one. There are two sets of contacts - one for the brake lights and I think the other manages cruise control cutout and Electronic Stability Control. My brake lights were working fine but my stability control (ESC) warning lamp was coming on and my AlfaOBD scan software pointed me to the brake pedal switch.

Anyway, no tools required - it just twists out. There are some instructions here on the regular 500 forum posted by the site administrator. The switch is self adjusting so you need to be sure that you are not pressing the brake pedal while you are twisting the new switch into place.

    Hope this helps!

    Paul
