Information from our sources on the 2020 Fiat 124 Spider has begun to trickle in, and preliminary news shows the 2020 Spider will be much like the 2019 model, and available in three versions – Classica, Lusso, and Abarth. I know people are worried about the brand, but the 124 spider is here to stay. One friend I have who sells fiats, she tells me 124 spider is the most popular car they sell. It beats 500x , 500L, 500e. In my area the 500 is most common then 500x then 124 spider. But I would like to hear about improvements like they did with the 500x front and rear sonar, or led lights. Upgraded engine, or maybe upgraded touch screen radio. I know people are asking for apple CarPlay. Since Mazda said you can get CarPlay for a small fee does that mean for the fiat connect?

i was at a Mazda dealer last week - I believe it was $299 to add Apple/Android to entertainment systems newer than 2016 I think? Same system seems to be in the 124

No response to their roadster twin adding ~20% power to their engine? That's a bit disappointing. Now the 124 is just better looking instead of also being the faster car.

They can always update this information, so fingers crossed. The FireFly Turbo with 177hp/210 lbs.ft would be the ticket.

I'm also being a bit of a debbie downer for the sake of being a contrarian. In real life the FIAT is probably still better to drive.

Mazda gained HP between the old redline and the new redline and got slightly taller gears to support it. The multiair 1.4T gets more torque sooner and has shorter ratios so you can run through the gears more often. So, the extra HP gives the Miata the advantage on a track, but the 124 is still the around town champ. Still, would be nice to see some love. FIAT often gets stuck in circular logic: "Nobody's buying our cars, we can't afford to update them for the US." meanwhile consumers declare "I'll buy a FIAT, once they update A.) B.) or C.)"

I did read somewhere that you can get the carbon fiber hardtop for the 124 in the US now. Close to $4000 IIRC but it looks better than the MX-5 RF which is priced similarly and you still get a ragtop. Win / Win.

The Spider could definitely use some love from the home office. I haven't driven the Mazda with the new engine, but the old one main advantage in my book was the NA throttle response and linear engine power. The Mazda feels like a lean runner, where as the Fiat feels more sophisticated European GT. From what I've seen an experienced, what is faster depends on the track and situation. That is based on stock cars. If you are going to mod the car, than the Fiat has the clear cut advantage.

Here is an idea I just thought of, what if they offer 2 or more engines for the 124 spider. But anyways I really see the 124 spider staying here for a long time. As history and current history old 124 spider was the USA highest selling model. So I have heard from a fiat USA rep that the current 124 spider is our best selling model. Also I know a fiat selesperson who told me that the local Mazda dealership doesn’t have a special financial department, so when those people come in they can’t buy, been sending them to the fiat dealer. So there manager created a department so those customers could be bought. They told me it has helped sales. Anyways I see lots of 124 on fiat lots here in San Diego.

I stopped by one if the few remaining Fiat/Alfa dealers left in the area. They had a lot of 2018 Fiata 124's sitting around on sale super cheap (17-23K). There were two 500 Abarth's, both auto trans (yuk). Didn't test drive any of the Fiata's, but heard a customer's car starting up. The exhaust note is much better than the Mazda-powered model, but I bet the reliability of the Japanese engine would ultimately be a better bet for the long haul.
