    Excessive charge port play?

I just bought a 2015 500e and I still have about a 1-day window to return it and cancel the deal.

On level 2 charging I was getting the "Service Charging System" error and intermittent disconnects. I'm wondering if there's too much play at the charge port which is leading to a bad connection. Could owners take a look at this video and tell me if this is how yours is or not:

    Thanks in advance!

There should be no play at all. What kind of charger is it? Car port if you see no cracks in orange plastic is not the reason. And you should not wiggle like that with the connector! The orange plastic will eventually brake. Just pull strongly out to disconnect.

The orange car port isnt moving at all. None, zero, zip.

The charge handle is all over the place.

Inspect the orange charge port on the car. If there are no cracks, the issue is not the car, but the charger handle.

Go to a charge station, and plug a few handles into your car. I say a few, because by their nature, public charge stations are abused and neglected. But, if you try a few, you should get a couple that snug right up, nice and tight, to show you how they should feel.

The "service system" and the goal posts flashing on the dash, are either showing a bad connection (handle flopping around) or that you are trying to charge before the car has disengaged the relay that connects the car (loud thunk about 10-15 seconds after key comes out)

To sum up, the car has a learning curve, and this is the best place to learn it all. Unless the orange port is cracked, I do not think the car is the issue.

That video is with the OEM level 1 charger, just to demonstrate the looseness, but like others who have gotten this error, it only occurs on level 2 chargers. I went to 3 different public chargers (2 ChargePoint, 1 Volta) and the handles always have that much play when connected to the port, and just nudging them will sometimes interrupt the charge. I noticed no damage to the orange connector although perhaps a piece is broken off where the hook from the charge handle latches on.

I'm glad to hear that there shouldn't be any play at all -- fortunately, I'm able to return the car, which is what I'm going to do.

Mine (also a Used 2015 from CA) did this for a bit until I cleaned the port contacts with a qtip and some contact cleaner. I blew it out with canned air, then let it dry. Hasn't done it since.

I hope you get another one. Totally in love with mine, bought used in Sep. '18. No play in mine, although I have not wiggled it like that. Mine is positive.
