    Potential boost leak/air filter issue

    Hello All!

    2015 Abarth 500C - 39000 Miles

I just joined today actually after running through the forums as a lurker for a while.

Anyway the reason for joining is I searched through to look for my current issue only to find things that were sort of like what I was experiencing but not fully.

Essentially about a month ago I started to notice when I get on the accelerator I hear the turbo of course but I hear an even louder sucking/whoosh sound. It is far louder than stock and seems to be taking in a whole lot more air. Now I haven't noticed any dips in performance (hence why I gave it a month) and the only modification I have is a diverter valve. My thoughts were it is either an issue with the stock airbox or potentially a small boost leak? But like a said no loss in performance so I'm not really sure.

    Thank you for any information!

    Hi there,
I just saw your post, I have the same issue. The noise is coming from the passenger side almost as if the noise was inside the car. I just bought the car a 2017 Fiat 500L turbo
I looked all over for loose hoses in the engine bay, but nothing. This car has 1,500 miles on it and it says it belonged to Fiat Corp. I have dealer appointment on the 20th. ANY luck on your problem?

Are you using a different climate control since this started? Could it be normal sounds resonating through the cowl into the cabin with defroster ducts open for a change from summer driving? Otherwise, did you do anything like change the air filter or remove the intake for an oil change around that time? Those could be some of the reasons for an intake leak, or louder sound in cabin, than what was normal..

If not, then check your air filter to make sure it is properly seated in the assembly. Air filter grease applied sparingly to the filter surround and wiped off lightly helps keep the filter from becoming pinched and being distorted during cover installation. If pinched it can create a gap where air bypasses unfiltered and sound will pass outward at a greater volume. If you changed the air filter to one without the foam prefilter/silencer, or other washable aftermarket filter, it will be louder. As well, check the intake rubber elbows for proper flush fitment to their connection points. Some have found the edge of the rear one folded in on itself and leaking.

There are many other possibilities for leaks, which would create a louder sound, but those are easy checks to start with.

Update for any one who cares, The 500L has been at Fiat for 2 weeks and They think they may have found the problem, I visited the dealership and I personally spoke to the Tech and saw the vehicle disassembled. They showed me where they think the noise is coming from, They found the seal on the windshield at the passenger lower corner up the windshield about 8 inches leaking air through it. They had me sit in the passenger seat and force air through it from the outside and the air was coming right in. They said their having an outside glass company come in and their going to try and seal it without pulling the windshield out. I hope this works, I will keep you guys updated..

Here's an update to anyone out there with the similar issue, The problem was solved! I originally had a air gushing noise coming into the passenger side interior it was only on acceleration and diminished when foot was taken off the gas pedal. It sounded like the turbo, it was so loud in the interior. The dealer found the window seal was not sitting properly at the passenger lower corner and about 8 inches up at the passenger side or just missing, so they lifted the windshield and resealed it and the noise is gone!!! very Happy with the results, just an incredible find on their part, they had the car for 3 weeks but they never gave up. I just want to add to FIATCARES on this site you were absolutely no help to me and it would help if you empty your full mailbox!

I sure appreciate your updates. Should it or anything similar ever happen, its in the memory bank and will be something I check. I’ve dealt with door seals, water leaks, mis-aligned fenders and doors and do understand the excess cabin noise and leaks they can create, but still know they are easily overlooked. Good work of their technicians in pursuing it to the end and not just passing you off as another annoying customer.

Apologies I have been so tied up I just actually was able to log back in to view all this! Thank you for all the information. I will check all the things suggested here. As an update, yes the sound is still happening but I haven't had the time to dig into it.

I will reply back with what I find that way anyone with a similar issue can hopefully find more information.
