Please Help. 2015 Fiat 500e brakelight problem.

    Hey guys.

Joined the forum to solve a issue we are having. We have a 2015 Fiat 500e with
23k. Everything is great accept recently the rear driver side breaklight went out.
    No big deal, got a new bulb. Put the new bulb in but it still doesn’t work! Here’s the kick;
whe you step on the break it does light up; but just the normal everyday driving rear light function
that illuminates while lights are on doesn’t work. Again, when brake is pressed; the bulb lights up
But when brake is then released it goes off again. What am I missing or what is goin on here. Any help
would be appreciated! Thanks everyone and hope everyone is having a great week!

    -Christian P.

Sounds like a bad or broken connection in the ground wire.

Just to be completely clear, you seem to be saying that the brake light operates correctly but the running light doesn't light up.

It is a dual filament bulb that electrically operates like two separate lights, but within a single bulb. You can see two separate filaments inside the bulb, and each filament is connected to a separate contact at the base of the bulb. The brake signal is connected to the larger filament, and the running light signal is connected to the smaller filament.

The running light might not be making a good contact in the socket. Make sure that the bulb and connectors are properly seated. If that doesn't fix it, there is a chance that the bulb may have a bad running light filament. Swap the bulbs between the left and right taillight, and see if the problem moves to the other side. If it does, then the bulb is defective. If it still behaves the same way, then there may be a connection problem further up the circuit. Before the brake light went out, are you certain that the running light was working?

If it is a problem with the ground wire, then the brake light also shouldn't work.

I’ve read his problem differently. I think his tail light (not the brake light) is only working while he applies the brake.

Was the problem the same before you replaced the bulb? Maybe you didn’t replace with a dual filament type? Just trying to think of easy things first.

It's ENTIRELY possible the new bulb is bad. Replace it again.

My comment was based on this statement:
when you step on the break it does light up; but just the normal everyday driving rear light function that illuminates while lights are on doesn’t work.

Here are some possible causes of the problem:

    1. The new bulb is not dual filament. The official bulb type is P21/5W (the most common equivalent in the US is 1157). The base should look like this, with 2 contacts:
    2. The new bulb is correct but not seated properly in the socket.
    3. The new bulb is correct but defective.
    4. Other connection problem in wiring or connector
